I was wondering what these guys were going to do next. I was pretty sure it was going to be good, but I didn't know how they were going to follow-up a masterpiece (Southern Rock Opera) and I didn't know which direction they would be heading in this time. All curiosities were put to rest last Tuesday when "Decoration Day" was released. This time out, we don't get a concept-album discussing the "duality of the Southern Thang" but rather a collection of fifteen tracks about wreckless youth, heartbreak, regret, drinkin' beer, and suicide. The band has gotten more tuneful and their songwriting (to me anyway) has gone up half a notch. The band still roars like their blasting out of a garage and Patterson's voice has gotten slightly rougher.
How are the songs? Well, they're GREAT. The band is in full swing, and despite the dark subjects, it sounds like the guys were having a blast playing. Just check out the Eagles-esque "Marry Me" and "Hell No, I Aint Happy". The album is a rock-fest with a few ballads thrown in there ("My Sweet Annette" will make you tear up) and then the title track comes up near the end and steals the show. Wait till you hear that one. That song alone makes the album worth owning. Now, THAT'S song writing!!!
If this doesn't get these guys some airplay, then I don't know what will. This is rock music at its finest. While I loved "Southern Rock Opera", I think that "Decoration Day" has made them my favorite band. Go check this one out and you'll see what I'm talking about.
