Free Music Notes for Do Or DieFree Music Review: Better than . . . well, anything popular today Hit: 5 Stars
Sing Loud, Sing Proud was the first Dropkick Murphys album I bought. After my first listen, I ran out and picked this up. These guys are the musical equivelant to crack. Once you get a little, you want more. Do or Die is more straight-out punk and less folk than Sing Loud, but it's STILL fifty times better than ANYTHING on the radio today. If all was right in the world, these guys would be bigger than the horrid White Stripes *shudder* or the talentless Strokes *double shudder.* This is punk in its purest form; loud, hard, and no song is over four minutes long. The Songs: Cadence to Arms - Best punk cover ever. Do or Die - A solid punk song. Makes you want to go on strike. Get Up - Not their best, but still VERY good. Never Alone - My favorite DKM song. About brotherhood and sticking up for your friends. Caught in a Jar - Didn't much like it at first. Then I stopped skipping it three seconds in. AWESOME song. Very bouncy. Memories Remain - Very sing-along punk. It hooks you from the first note. Road of the Righteous- I like this song so much, I got sick of it. Far Away Coast - NICE ballad. And I hate ballads. Firestarter Karaoke - Another song that had to grow on me. Loved it by the third listen. Barroom Hero - Quintessential DKM song. This demonstrates what these guys do best. 3rd Man In - The only song on the CD I don't like. Maybe I should listen to it more. Tenant Enemy #1 - Another stick it to the man song from the guys who do it best. Finnegan's Wake - Like Cadence to Arms, this is classic folk covered right. Noble - GREAT song. Boys on the Docks (Pub Version)- I like the original more, but this is still a great version. Skinhead on the MBTA - Funny song with a great meaning. If you're tired of the same crap over and over, pick these guys up. If you're not, pick these guys up. Best band ever.
Free Music Review: It makes me proud to be Irish!!! Hit: 5 Stars
The first Murphys song I heard was "Never Alone". Althogh song does the album no justice. It is a great song but I had no Idea how good this band was. I bought this cd when I was in the US two years ago and haven't takin it off the top of my pile since! I tell you, It makes you proud to be Irish!1.Cadence to arms A Bagpipe song without any singing. It starts off slow, but when the murphys 1234 it becomes a great punk tune. 2.Do or Die The title track and one of the best. It starts where cadence 2 arms finfishes. 3.Get up A good punk song. 4.Never alone The first murphy's song i heard. good, but there is better. 5.Caught in a jar One of the best songs on the disc. Very Irish. 6.Memories remain Pretty good punk song. 7.Road of the righteous One of the weaker songs on the cd. It starts off with some ska guitar. 8.Far away coast A true Irish song. Acoustic with the swingin utters playing the flutes. About irsh people imigrating to America. 9.Firestarter Karaoke A good punk song about starting bar fights. 10.Barroom Hero The best song on the disc by far! 11.3rd man in Good song about fightin' too. 12.Tenant Enemy 1 Good punk song. 13.Finnegans wake Cover of a traditional irish song. 14.Noble One of my favourites. 15.Boys on the docks Acoustic version of one of the murphys oldest songs. 16.Skinhead on the MBTA The best punk song on the cd. And a great finish. This is the Dropkick murphys cd that influendced me to get all the others so I reccomend you start with this. If you want more punk get this. But if you want Irish get Sing loud Sing Proud. This is one of my favourite cds and every song will make you feel good.
Free Music Review: Powerful punk rock w/ a proud Irish edge Hit: 5 Stars
The Dropkick Murphys are one of my favorite bands and DO OR DIE is one of my favorite CDs. The band is in top form here, delivering song after song of pounding punk energy in the oi / streetpunk vein. They also have a great Irish feel, which makes them really stand out.The CD is filled with classic songs - "Get Up" is a punk anthem with sing-along vocals ("why don't you get up and get out! "), as are all of DKM's songs, it seems. "Never Alone" is easily one of the album's best songs, a proud anthem to the misunderstood skinhead filled with great lyrics that may open some people's eyes ("You're a hard-workin' man who's payed his dues / but they still call you racist on the evenin' news"). "Road of the Righteous" is my favorite song on the CD and one of my favorite songs. Everything comes together on it and Mike McColgan is in top form. "Far Away Coast" is beautiful, and "Fightstarter Karaoke" and "Barroom Hero" are classics. The album closes with several less-punk, more sing-along anthems like the old "Finnegan's Wake", "Boys on the Docks", and the cover (sort of) "Skinhead of the MTBA." DO OR DIE is a great album and the title says it all - you have to get it. Also, people criticize Al Barr a lot because he's not Mike, but he is great and The Gang's All Here is a great album. He is amazing live as well. If you get a chance to see a DKM show, don't miss it because they are one of the best live punk bands there is. If you want more songs from the McColgan era, be sure to check out THE EARLY YEARS.
Free Music Review: Buy or Die! Hit: 5 Stars
This is one hell of a great album! It's a must-have, whether you're already into punk, or just getting into it and looking for something to get you started. Do or Die is DKM's first LP, recorded with original vocalist Mike McColgan. The songs are very easy to get into...amazingly catchy without going anywhere close to pop. The album is consistently great from start to finish. There are two re-worked songs from the band's first release, the Boys on the Docks EP. The version of "Never Alone" contained on this album is slightly faster than the original, with extended verses. The other, "Boys on the Docks (Murphys pub version)" is an accoustic rendition of the original. The band's trademark Irish influence can be heard on "Caught in a Jar", "Far Away Coast" (which is actually about the Middle East, not Ireland), and of course their punked-up version of the Irish folk song "Finnegan's Wake". The bagpipes on "Barroom Hero" (truly a DKM classic!) and the album's intro, "Cadence to Arms" also add a great Celtic touch. As for my personal favorites, I'd have to go with "Fightstarter Karaoke", "Get Up", "Barroom Hero", "Never Alone","Noble", and "Skinhead on the MBTA". The latter mentioned song is a semi-cover of an older song ("Charlie on the MBTA"). It's about a guy who takes a ride on the MBTA (Boston's subway system),and is never let off the train. It's a cool song no matter where you're from, but it's extra cool for Boston natives (myself included),because Bostonians will know all of the places mentioned in the song. To sum it all up...this album is more than worthy of 5 stars, and it most certainly deserves to be in your collection.
Free Music Review: Top-notch Celtic/oi punk. Hit: 5 Stars
Boston's Dropkick Murphys, when fronted by original singer Mike McColgan, were one of the best punk acts anywhere. While current singer Al Barr is okay, his "Cookie Monster" voice does get a little overbearing sometimes, and the Murphys' recent albums desperately lack the originality and energy of Do Or Die. Do Or Die also has a harder, punkier sound and contains fewer Irish instruments compared to later albums (especially Sing Loud, Sing Proud). These guys owe more to the furious punk of the Stiff Little Fingers than the more Celtic-sounding Pogues, but when they do pull out the bagpipes (opening instrumental Cadence To Arms, Barroom Hero) they are truly sublime. This is energetic, hardhitting oi-punk, and even the more ballad-like tracks like Far Away Coast are totally rousing efforts. No alt-radio moping allowed! "Why don't you get up and get out!" From beginning to end Do Or Die is full of great infectious Irish melodies, punk thrashing, fist-pumping choruses that will have you shouting along in no time, and great working-class lyrics. If you aren't doing a drunken jig on top on the nearest piece of furniture by the time the awesome cover of Skinhead On The MTBA rolls in, you probably don't have a pulse. Picking highlights is pointless when the whole record is so good, though I'd be remiss if I didn't point out Get Up, Caught In A Jar, Fightstarter Karaoke, and Barroom Hero. If you love punk rock, just buy Do Or Die already. You'll be glad you did. Also check out Jackdaw and Flogging Molly.
