Free Music Notes for Live on St. Patrick's Day from Boston, MA at the Avalon BallroomFree Music Review: Great for a Live Album Hit: 4 Stars
Most live albums are either really disappointing or poorly recorded. This album is neither. The band plays well on-stage, and the recording is clear enough. A lot of times, on-stage guitar distortion translates into CD noise, but they've managed to control it. I credit the drummer's crispness for holding this one together.
Free Music Review: Great album, but I miss Mike Hit: 3 Stars
These guys are an amazing group of individuals that I can listen to constantly and never get bored. They represent all of the necessary qualities that a great band must have. They make their music and put it out there. Every song of theirs has a message and a purpose and you've gotta love the bagpipes. These guys do Punk way better than Flogging Molly and it's awesome that this year they get to headline the Warped Tour. With that said, let's get down to this Greatest hits/live album deal. Just about everyone of their best songs are on here. Everything is fast paced and clear. It's awesome that the CD has the monolagues in between the songs to show what it is like at a Dropkick show. Here's my problem. If I wasn't a hardkore Dropkick Murphy's fan, I'd give this album 5 stars. But I am a huge fan and i love Mike, the original singer. Nobody can bring it like he did it. Mike is the singer for this band. Do or Die made this band. Mike has an awesome voice for what the band was trying to do. On Do or Die, they were a very political band ready to do big things. But, Al Barr just doesn't have it in him and when he sings the songs off of Do or Die, it shows. What really pisses me off is that it seems like he doesn't care about the old songs because they aren't his. During songs like Boys on the Docks, he lets the croud do more singing than he does. He ruined Finnigans wake by trying to make it super fast and aggressive instead of keeping it a folky Irish song. The songs from Sing Loud, Sing Proud were fine. I had no problems with them. Those are his songs so of course he's gonna sound better on them. But PLEASE RESPECT THE OLD STUFF. I LOVE THIS BAND AND I DON'T WANT TO WATCH IT FALL LIKE SO MANY BANDS OUT TODAY.
Free Music Review: Live- You can feel the energy, after awhile it gets to be a bit much Hit: 3 Stars
It is obvious that The Dropkick Murphys are energized by their fans and this set of hard pounding numbers are sure to enthrall those same fans, but unless you are very familiar with this band, I wouldn't suggest this one. The vocals are buried under the mix and while the energy is great, it can wear you out after awhile without the live environment to reenergize you. A true fan should love this, a more casual listener like myself appreciates the power of the live band, but will probably only give this the occasional spin.
Free Music Review: Not as good as being there but pretty close Hit: 3 Stars
Nothing can take the place of experiencing the sheer energy of a Dropkick Murphy show, but this is pretty close to it. Some of the lyrics can be hard to understand because of all the backgroup noise, but hey that's their band.
Free Music Review: Dropkick Murphys Album Review Hit: 2 Stars
The product arrived well after the expected date. The album was in fine shape, but my shirt I purchased at the same time came 2 weeks before the CD. Odd and unfortunate. I may not order music or books any time soon from Amazon.
