Free Music Review: Definitive Irish punk rock - a must for any Boston sports bar

I am a longtime fan of the Pogues, so many friends had strongly recommended the Dropkick Murphys to me. I picked up "Warrior's Code" and was instantly hooked.
If you're familiar with the Pogues, the DMs are a heavier, thrashier bunch much more akin to Flogging Molly. Indeed, one could easily imagine DM and FM serving as representative East and West Coast Irish punk bands. Both bands feature wailing guitars, songs that are shouted as much as they are sung, and replete with fist pumping and chest-pounding rhythms.
Made nationally famous by Martin Scorsese's "The Departed," DM is a perfect song for the lads to get amped to before a big football match or scrum, and surely a must for every Boston sports bar thanks to the inclusion of the Red Sox anthem "Tessie" as a bonus track. Indeed, "Tessie" is one of two reasons that I give this album four stars instead of five - I'm unfortunately surrounded by a bunch of Red Sox bandwagon fans and I'm pretty much sick of those guys right now.
The other, more serious reason is that the DMs are a bit narrow in their appeal. While I can find a Pogues song for almost every occasion or mood, and Shane MacGowan's intelligent lyrics and booze-soaked voice are remarkably versatile, the DMs are good for one thing - kicking serious ***.
This isn't a criticism, but just a recognition of the fact that the DMs set out to do just one thing - and they succeeded brilliantly. Here's hoping these guys stretch their musical talents just a bit more. Until then, I'll be thankful that they've done what they've done so far and enjoy this album for years.

Since 1997, Boston's Dropkicks have released six albums, each bettering the last in sales.
