Free Music Notes for Warriors Code (Dig)Free Music Review: Bagpipe Punk kicks ass Hit: 5 Stars
The thing that makes the Dropkick Murphy's stand out is obviously the traditional Irish flavor of their punk, and they don't disappoint on this album.
I think they have finally struck a balance on this album between Irish/Punk that they never had before. My favorite song on the album is "Captain Kelly's Kitchen" (Tura-lura-la, Tura-lura-laddie), but the first six or seven songs are gold with the possible exception of Sunshine Highway which I like just fine, but those 19-year-old punkers who listened to C*ck Sparrer before they were even born will probably despise (i.e. - it seems a bit poppy).
"Wicked Sensitive Crew", which is either an in-joke or a dig at Metallica, is hilarious. It makes me want to go back to Lowell. No one says "wicked" in Minneapolis, I assure you. "The Auld Triangle" is also a great song and I notice that Amazon has a sound sample. The beginning of it always reminds me of LOTR, but the song really rocks... it's probably my 4th or 5th favorite track on the album, so listen to it and if you like it, BUY NOW.
Finally, the recording of "Tessie" is worth the price of the album (I got it for $9.99 at Target) and I also suggest you pick up Punk-O-Rama 10 - the DVD disk has a great video for this version that they filmed in Fenway.
Free Music Review: One of the best punk rock CDs of the last decade Hit: 5 Stars
I have to admit, Dropkick fans are some of the most moronic out there (and given the fanbases of Agnostic Front and Turbonegro, that's saying a lot); and I never really liked their older, supposedly more authentic oi-style stuff. But this CD blows me away. The band are a tight, controlled unit, the vocals actually work perfectly with the music, and the celtic-rock elements are fully and unashamedly on display. The covers are uniformly great and the originals are fun. DKM lyrics have always swung between the intelligent and well-written and dumb, cliche glorification of barroom brawling and homoerotic gang mentality. They've swung much more to the first category here, and "Wicked Sensitive Crew" shows that the band actually has a sense of humor, while songs like "Citizen CIA" are more thoughtful than knee-jerk. If the lyrics don't make you groan and you can dance to it, it's a keeper. But if the band takes it up a notch and does everything they do well and nothing they don't, it becomes great. Especially worth it for their versions of "Shipping Out To Boston", "Captain Kelly's Kitchen" and "The Auld Triangle", but there's not a bad track on here. Even the title track, an ode to Micky Ward, manages to be be fun rather than thuggish. Pick it up!
Free Music Review: Step Right Up Hit: 5 Stars
I have a confession to make; initially, I did not like the Dropkick Murphys. Like so many others I was reintroduced to them through their audio cameo in The Departed and I decided it was time to give them the time of day. I was hesitant though, screaming, rough music isn't generally in my taste, but I was starving for some new music. I made the mistake of buying 'Sing Loud, Sing Proud' which I did not enjoy, finding it too abbrasive.
However, a short time later I was reccomended The Warrior's Code, and I gave them a second chance...
This whole album is awesome. Being an artist, I often listen to music while I work and I can listen to this 4-6 times in an evening. I listen to it in my car, and at work.
If you are hesitant, or curious about the Dropkick Murphys, start with this. From the other albums I have listened to since, this is by far the best all around. It's rough and gruff, but also so much fun. It's impossible not to smile while belting out the lyrics to 'Wicked sensitive crew'
Dropkick Murphys are one of those bands like Tom Waits, where if on your first listen you do not like it, then wait a bit, and give it another listen and it will grow on you like a Chia Pet.
Buy it. Try it. Love it. Share it.
Free Music Review: THE DROPKICK MURPHYS AT THEIR BEST!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This cd got me hooked on the band. Their heavy sounding punk found in almost all of the tracks on this cd is stunning. I've listened to this countless times, and since I have I've collected every one of these guy's cds. Below is a run down of all the songs:
1. Spirit's Alive-3/4 Suprising twist of mellow bagpipes to heavy guitar
2. Warrior's Code-3/4 Hardcore salute to legendary boxer.
3. Captain Kelly's Kitchen-4/4 Fast upbeat
4. The Walking Dead-3/4 similar to the rest;nothing new
5. Sunshine Highway-6/4 FAVORITE song EVER by this band!!!
6. Wicked Sensitive Crew-4/4 funny
7. The Burden-3/4 Good change of pace with a slower tune
8. Citizen C.I.A-4/4 FAST AND FURIOUS
9. Green Fields of France-2/4 Probably least favorite on this cd
10. Take it and Run-3/4 Sounds Very Similar to the Walking Dead
11. I'm Shipping off to Boston-4/4 Cool blend of classic celtic and punk
11. The Auld Triangle-2/4 Kinda Annoying
12. Last Letter Home-3/4 Nothing new;another ok tune
13. Tessie-4/4 GREAT way to end a GREAT cd!!!
In conclusion if you're too cheap and/or lazy to buy the whole cd just buy Sunshine Highway
Free Music Review: Lets Go Murphys! Hit: 5 Stars
This is probably my favorite band so this review is going to be biased but i've been listening to this band for some time now. Every cd is great IMO, however some of the "true punks" stopped liking the band after Do or Die/Gangs all here era. The new cuts on this cd expands on where they left off on Blackout. The familiar sound of bagpipes, accordians, and tin whistle mixed in with punk rock has made this band popular amongst Boston and now across the U.S. I would try to chose my favorite songs but i like them all, however "The Green Fields Of France" was a pleasant suprise, I didn't think Al Barr's voice could ever sound that good. The song "Last Letter Home" is also another that stands out, the song was written about a soldier that died over in Iraq. The family had received a letter from him saying if he dies he wants them to have DKM play "fields of athenry" at his funeral. DKM ends up playing it at the funeral and writing this song based on the soldier and his families letters they had sent back in forth. I recently heard that the band is releasing a Memorial Fundraiser CD Single to help raise money for the family, which is something you don't see everyday coming from musicians.
