Free Music Review: Excellent but muddy sound
Hit: 5 Stars

Excellent album. Impressed with Duffy's distinctive vocals, and her song writing. Really enjoying this album -- something where there is a good deal of thought and effort to create an artistic work rather than a few catchy songs with filler tunes. Best album I have heard for a long time. Makes me think a bit about Ricky Lee Jones in that the voice is distinctive and the singer is really contributing to the artistic process rather than being "produced". Five stars. My one complaint is the sound engineering has made the sound muddy. May be because songs are engineered with less dynamics so they sound good on iPods. However, this quality of artistry deserves better. Alternatively it may simply be poor engineering (lack of funds?) from the start. Duffy, if you read this, lets hope you demand "throw back dynamics" on your next album -- something where the background sounds and singers stand out, and your great voice is in front of it all. My hopes are, like Ricky Lee Jones, your next album maintains the artistry. Finally, being of Welsh decent I'm always happy that such a great musical culture continues to produce great talent. Maybe a Duffy/Bryn Terfel duet?? That's be too cool if someone could pull it off (artistically)!!

Edit: Don't mean for my comments on sound quality to diminish my recommendation. In some ways this is the time we live in re: compressed sound on mastered recordings. Sad, but until consumers care, it will go on. Album is still very worth the purchase. Since buying an MP3 or AAC version will add additional compression, reason enough to buy the full CD.

Free Music Review: A Stunning Debut
Hit: 5 Stars

Maybe I'm a little late to the party but the debut recording from Welsh born songstress Duffy has me blown away. Without being well acquainted in the deeper mysteries of gene splicing it is hard to imagine what could come from a mixture of Dusty Springfield, Nancy Sinatra, Marilyn McCoo, Shelby Lynne, Petula Clark, Rickie Lee Jones, Chrissie Hynde (or the chick who sang Girl from Ipanema) and believe it to be any more combustible or captivating than Duffy's auspicious coming out effort, Rockferry. Duffy has created a sound that I did not think possible in 2009 - sixties without satire.

You know the drill - new artist, one or two cuts are cool (if you're lucky) and the rest function as digital filler and/or make very smart home-made coasters. Duffy is the rare exception - every song on Rockferry grooves and/or shakes the house down with a sound that is reminiscent of others - but in the best way possible is completely new. Honestly, I have to admit that I was listening with such low expectations that as the album unspooled, the increasing odds of Duffy falling off the artistic cliff was certainly top-of-mind. It just never happened.

As for several of the other reviewers who seem very down on this record based on the overwhelming promotion that surrounded the release, I can only say that up until 72 hours ago, I had never heard of Duffy and am just reacting to the music without predjudice or prior conviction. On auditory evidence alone, Rockferry remains an amazing record and is brilliant from start to finish. Very highly recommended.

I am hypnotized by this Duffy. Not in a hypnotize by biggie kind of way, but in a 60's downtown gretna way. This CD is pure as snow before people drive on it and make it dirty or relieve themselves on it. I was introduced to Duffy, like most others, when I heard the song Mercy. I go to the gym four days a week (six when I have a date) and Mercy is a great song to go 14 miles on the treadmill to. I just put it on repeat and go. My favorite track though is not Mercy, which probably surprises you after what I just said about it. I like Rockferry. That track takes me back to Gretna in the 60s when double decker buses drove people around and dropped them off at the bowling for a night of shenanigans and tomfoolery.

I'm a really good bowler. Our team took 4 games out of a possible 4 last night. That's 100%!!!! We did the same thing last week. Can I pick up a 7-10 split? Are kids with syrup on their faces annoying? We had a bowling duel for the ages that Duffy might as well be the soundtrack four. Burns, Kroll, J-abs and I were bowling in the Eastern Nebraska Kind of Professional Bowling league for Gretna. We called ourselves Asschowder (big surprise). We bowled Ashland and let me tell you that Burns just didn't like Ashland. He called it trashland (that's ice cold). We all bowled over 250 and beat them by 435 pins. We let them bowl three balls at a time in the last game just to try and keep it close. Don't let your kids see that ever again! Let's just say average bowled for Trashland.

Free Music Review: Old School Soul, For A New School Audience
Hit: 5 Stars

Off the cusp of the Amy Winehouse sound, we're now treated to an immensely talented and soulful singer by the name of Duffy. She has one of those familiar faces that you think you know and one of those voices that you haven't heard for decades, unless you break out your old album collection of course. She flew into the UK charts with her debut single "Mercy" the backing music was nostalgic and the voice unique. Many compared the woman to Ms. Winehouse, but I would certainly put Duffy in a category of her own easily comparing her to the Etta James' of the world.

What annoys me in a way is, she's so talented, I mean that with true sincerity but it upsets me that she has now resorted to the robbing tactics of releasing a "Special" edition version of the album with about 6 new songs, one to be a single. It seems to be the trend of the music companies now as a way of milking as much money from the fans as possible. I would honestly advise that if you haven't bought the regular album already then wait for the special edition. The extra songs are worth the cash, I just don't think it's right that people should be forced to buy the original album and then should have to fork out again for the special edition.

Top 3 songs are the current singles

1. Mercy
2. Rain On Your Parade
3. Warwick Avenue.

Buy it and love it (The special edition I mean.)

Free Music Review: Great Debut Album
Hit: 5 Stars

While perusing the internet one day, I came across an article on Duffy. I had never heard of her or heard any of her music, but I love to find and listen to new artists, so I went to her website. I was floored by her. Her voice is soulful to say the least and yes, she is likened to 60's British pop, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, etc. I have recommended her Rockferry album to all of my music loving friends and so far, I've got positive responses from all of them. There is not one song on this debut CD that I dislike. "Serious", "Hanging on Too Long" and "Warwick Avenue" are my favorites, but I like all of the other songs and listen to this CD in its entirety, never once FF'ing to the next song. That's rare for me. Normally, I buy a CD and end up only liking two or three songs on it. Also, someone else recommended finding another song, not on Rockferry, called "Breaking My Own Heart", another great song from this Welsh phenomenon. I don't know all the hype about whether or not she was on Britain's version of American Idol and was a runner-up nor have I heard any hype about the marketing for her. I am oblivious to other people's opinions as truly, it is a matter of individual taste. Yes, there will be some who don't like Duffy, but at least listen for yourself and form your own opinion. I truly enjoy Duffy, her music and her voice and can't wait for her next CD. I hope it is as great as Rockferry is.
