Free Music Notes for RockferryFree Music Review: A Powerful Voice With Much To Say Hit: 5 Stars
Luv,luv, luv'd this cd.Originally purchased the cd due to the videos played on VHI every morning while I dress for work. Duffy was listed as an artist "you oughta know". The first video released was for "Warwick Avenue", her voice was so expressive of a cheated and broken heart, that I would just stop and listen. When I purchased the cd, I found I loved several different cuts, for several different reasons. The cd has a retro feel, but the lyrics have resonance today."Distant Dreamer" could have been played for the Obama campaign.I cannot sit still when I hear "Mercy" not even if I'm driving, and with "Stepping Stone" I'm really hoping she finds someone to love and treat her well, I get the impression that she is not lucky at love.Absolutely, an artist you should know and worth a listen.
Free Music Review: Definitely worth the acclaim. Hit: 5 Stars
She fits in with that whole "Blue-eyed Soul" genre with recent fellow artists Adele and Amy Winehouse. But I honestly enjoyed Duffy's album over her contemporaries. It probably deserves its own category of "Vintage Pop" as it has a strong 1960s vibe about it (hear song "Rockferry" and "Stepping Stone") more strongly heard than in her contemporaries. I thought at first that would make me like the album less, but I was pleased with the overall "classic" quality of the songs. She should have won Best New Artist this year but she must deal with a deserved Pop Vocal Album Grammy instead.
Top Five Songs (in listing order):
"Rockferry"
"Warwick Avenue"
"Stepping Stone"
"Hanging on Too Long" (Gorgeous song!)
"Mercy"
Free Music Review: Duffy's "Rockferry" Hit: 5 Stars
I purchased this album for the first time, perhaps, late last summer, 2008. You know how it takes you a long while much of the time to get used to an entire album? And many times you are disappointed that only one or two other songs besides the first "hit" song are all you really care for?
Well, not so with this album; especially to me, a "baby boomer" who remembers really good music in the style of Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, etc.
THIS particular purchase of "Rockferry" was for my daughter, who, upon listening to the album in my car while we drove together, wanted the album immediately.
Thank you, Duffy! Congratulations on your success, and we look forward to more of your music in the future.
Free Music Review: Duffy can air it out! Hit: 5 Stars
I stumbled across this CD when I was browsing through BMG. I was familiar with the hit single 'Mercy' and was curious to hear the rest of Duffy's songs. I was completely enthralled with her the moment I started listening. If ever there is to be a Motown revival, Duffy will lead the way. Her catchy voice with its amazing range and her soulful songs are simply incredible. I think this album is simply spectacular in every way! She is so fresh to the music scene...not the normal, run-of-the-mill crap that is all too common with the young female artists with no talent whatsoever. Duffy breaks barriers with her voice and songs. She has tremendous talent and this is an amazing album...buy it...you won't be disappointed...
