Free Music Notes for RockferryFree Music Review: Duffy leads new soul revolution from British Isles Hit: 5 Stars
It may be history repeating itself but it sure sounds good. Just as the first British Invasion made everyone appreciate rock'n'roll again, the Welsh warbler Duffy (and a few other female singers from across the pond) are reminding American listeners just how good soul music was before it was cast aside in favor of rap and hip-hop. This is not a case, however,of mere stylistic regurgitation,as in some retro artists like Lenny Kravitz. These songs stand on their own and offer a real breath of fresh air in a somewhat stale musical scene.Don't let the omnipresence of "Mercy" fool you into thinking you have heard all Duffy has to offer;that song is just the tip of the iceberg here.Buy the CD and I think you'll agree.
Free Music Review: I Can't Stop Hit: 5 Stars
I bought the CD after hearing just a few seconds off of my sister's MP3 player. Of course the song was her hit "Mercy". Since it has arrived I have been unable to listen to anything else. This woman has such a unique voice and delivery I can't stop listening. She actually does what Amy Winehouse tries to do. She does 60's pop songs (no song is very 4 minutes) with a 21st century voice. Having lived through the 60's, these are songs Lulu, Dusty Springfield or Cilla Black would have sung. The arrangements are in keeping with the arangements of the mid 60's. She's done something quite unique here and I hope to hear more of her in the future. This girl has talent with a capitol T.
Free Music Review: 10 tracks a solid 10 Hit: 5 Stars
Goodbye Amy Winehouse, Hello Duffy. Duffy's got the same retro sound--some liken her to Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Petula Clark, or yep, Amy Winehouse. Duffy's got a strong soulful voice that cuts right to the bone.
"Mercy" was the cut that got my attention, but listen to the dark "Rockferry" or "Warwick Avenue." Those are the three header cuts, but they're all worth a repeat or three on the turntable. Just listen for yourself and see what I mean. You need longer cuts than what's on this page, Youtube has several to pick from and they'll sell this CD.
My only complaint is this CD is short at only ten tracks. It's still well worth the price.
Free Music Review: best album of 2008 Hit: 5 Stars
I've bought 5 albums this year and wasn't thrilled with any of them until I finally got to Duffy. This girl singer from Wales is simply amazing. Her voice has a kitten trying to sound tough quality that reminds me of the Ronnettes or a very young Aretha Franklin. This is a gorgeous album. The wall of sound is a thrill to listen to especially on Mercy and Distant Dreamer. The lyrics make sense, you can sing along and not be embarrassed at mouthing nonsense. Plus, although this goes through all the stages of young love you won't be ashamed to have your mom or your kid catch you listening to it.
Duffy has a piece of work to be proud of. I loved this.
Free Music Review: "I'll leave my shadow, to fall behind..." Hit: 5 Stars
Rockferry by Duffy is a cool and unique album from this sassy singer/songwriter. Duffy has a very strong and soulful voice, a lot of people have compared her to Dusty Springfield. The melodies and lyrics are pretty and simple, songs like Warwick Avenue, Mercy, Hanging On Too Long, I'm Scared, and Stepping Stone are some of the standouts. The opener, Rockferry is probably the strongest of the bunch. The closer, Distant Dreamer is optimistic and lush with a variety of instruments that fit perfectly with Duffy's vocals. I wasn't expecting much from this album, I was pleasantly surprised with how much talent this gal actually has. Buy it today!
