Free Music Review: Duran Duran Reach The Stars With Astronaut
Hit: 5 Stars

Duran Duran's "Astronaut" is the group's first studio album with all five orginal band members in 21 years. The album
sounds modern and updated with echoes of their earlier sound which is everything you'd expect from Duran Duran. You'll
find a great mix of songs on this 12 track cd. The band's lead single (Reach Up For The) Sunrise is an uplifting,
feel good song. What Happens Tommorw is an album highlight sounding like an upbeat Ordinary World, with a strong bass line.
Nice is another upbeat song which sounds like the band of the eighties with a groove. Finest Hour is another highlight,
with under-rated sound scapes; it's a beautiful melody with dark overtones.
Chains sounds somewhat familiar to Come Undone with John's great bass-line. Still Breathing is a beautiful and inspiring ending to an album which proves Duran Duran mean business and are here to stay.
The inclusion of a bonus DVD which includes live performances, behind the scenes footage and the video for (Reach up for the) Sunrise makes this purchase even better. I have been a fan of the band since 1981
and Astronaut is a must have cd for old and new fans alike. I give Astronaut five big shining stars.

Free Music Review: INCREDIBLE!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

The year 2004 has been bad for me in a lot of ways. But the one shining spot in it has been the return of Duran Duran (read: World's Greatest Rock n Roll Band...Nick Rhodes, you're my hero).
To describe the sound of this album is a simple matter: it's the same sound Duran had in 1983-84, but infused with everything that has happened musically since then (it's called "artistic growth," something this band has been constantly involved with, despite what those idiot music critics want you to believe.)
"Sunrise" just plain rocks. "Bedroom Toys" is one of the best Prince-style funks I've heard in a long while. "What Happens Tomorrow" is not just a "feel good" song as they have often been accused of solely focusing on, but rather it is a song of hope (at least I have taken hope from it). The album's one weak link is the title track, but it is only slightly less impressive than the rest of the body of work on "Astronaut."
The entire effort is proof positive to those moronic nay-sayers that wish to pigeon-hole these artists as "pretty boys" or "an 80's band" that Duran Duran are still musically relevant after all these years. Pity the same can't be said for critic-favorites like R.E.M.

Free Music Review: A great comeback, a fantastic blend of old and new
Hit: 5 Stars

Everyone knows that Duran Duran was "my band" beginning in 82 when I was 12. I grew up with these guys, and was hoping for a great return. They did it. I mean, I've purchased every DD album within days of its release, and have even come to love 'Lberty' (My Antarctica and Downtown are two of their all-time best songs), but even I was a little worried that this new material just wouldn't hit the mark.

The boys do an excellent job of mixing the old vibe with a fresh new sound, and its all Duran Duran. My favorites are 'What Happens Tomorrow' (clearly their next single) and 'Nice'. For those looking for comparisons, I'd have to say its a mix between Big Thing and Pop Trash, but a few times the album seems to bare a close resemblance to the Seven & the Ragged Tiger days (thank you John Taylor). All in all, I really think people are going to like this album.

Oh, one other mention. They need to release a live album from this material, because the DVD illustrates how strong these songs sound live, and with more guitar (welcome back Andy) and less synths (sorry Nick). The live mix of the new stuff sounds like it came out of the same studio sessions as their first album. No kidding.

Free Music Review: Superb for a "reunion" album!
Hit: 5 Stars

It is dangerous to market an album as a "reunion." I think we all wish we could be rushed back in time to rediscover Duran Duran. Wouldn't it be marvelous to listen to Rio again - for the first time; to discover John Taylor's wonderfully crisp bass lines and to hear Simon's super-unique voice without any pre-conceived expectations. We expect reunion albums to do the impossible - we expect a band to create new music which is somehow instantly as satisfying as their best song off their best album.

Astronaut does not accomplish the impossible - but it gets an "A" for effort. It is a superb blend of old and new and retains many of the elements that made Duran Duran's original music so appealing. Simon's voice is still the perfect whine, the sound is full and layered and the boys still don't sound like they have ever heard of Nirvana. However, if I had one complaint, it would be the bass. The album doesn't feature John Taylor's bass as much as I would prefer. I have always believed that his crisp bass lines were a big part of Duran Duran's success. The bass lines in Astronaut are certainly well done, but I think they lack the overall energy of some of Duran Duran's prior work.

Free Music Review: THE GREATNESS IS BACK!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this CD! There really isn't one song I don't like! Though I think my favorite is "Nice". The great thing about Duran Duran is they're unique - especially with Simon's own brand of lyrics. He's so creative. They're all very creative in their own area of expertise. Finally the kids of today will hear what a great band sounds like!

Not having all the original members of the band all these years really changed the flavor of Duran Duran - and I had not really listened since some of the original members left. When Andy and Roger left, you could see the value of the contributions when their contributions were absent. Because Simon, Nick and John did most of the talking during interviews you thought perhaps they were the creative force. But when Roger and Andy left - you found out that wasn't true - it was all 5 members. This new album is like a breath of fresh air! I've been waiting about 15 years for this! I'm confident this album will not only please old fans but generate new ones.

I've been listening to this album all day for the past two days at work (yes 8 hours - over and over) and I love it even more with each listen!
