Free Music Notes for Astronaut (With Bonus DVD)Free Music Review: Really good to Blow-You-Away terrific - a must-buy CD! Hit: 5 Stars
Duran Duran's long-awaited reunion CD, "Astronaut", is well worth your hard-earned dollars. The first time I heard it there were a few songs that seemed o.k. but not great, while others blew me away. And, guess what? I listened again and ... those o.k. songs get better with another listen. Some are really good, some are actually great! Give them a second chance if you are unsure the first time around.
My personal favorites on this CD are the fun and funky, oh-so-sassy "Bedroom Toys"; first single "(Reach Up for the) Sunrise"; the bass-driven dance grooves of "Nice"; the title track "Astronaut" (not sure how to describe - which can be a good thing!); and the melt-your-heart "Still Breathing". (Listen to the latter in a quite space and it will transport you to a more peaceful place.)
Bonus with this limited edition is the 45 minute DVD of the original five's recent live performance at Wembley Arena, and off-the-cuff backstage footage. Note: There are some obscenities uttered on the DVD so if you easily take offense you may consider skipping the limited edition and going for the regular CD.
I loved this so much I got two copies!
Free Music Review: Duran Duran return with the same sound updated! Hit: 5 Stars
ASTRONAUT should be a big album for Duran Duran. It's the return of the original line-up including the Taylors, and its first single "Sunrise" is already climbing the charts and getting video airplay. Seek out the deluxe packaging with the DVD because it includes a 45 minute concert at Wembley Arena in London with the boys playing some new songs as well as old familiar hits. It also includes a 24 page color book with photos and lyrics. The sound is basically Duran Duran - guitar driven pop with synthesizers taking the co-lead. LeBon is still one of the most unmistakeable talented lead singers in music today. The whole album is what you would expect - shiny and slick production with polish to spare. This is no grunge throwback, but a continuation of the art rock/Roxy Music style they mastered back in the 80s. It sounds retro and fresh all at once. "Sunrise" is the easy standout, but "Astronaut", "Want you More" and "Still Breathing" are easily memorable as are most all the tracks. At last these guys can stand on their musical achievements without having to be accused of just being "pretty boys". Awesome album!
Free Music Review: It's all good! Hit: 5 Stars
Seriously, it is. It took me a couple of listens from beginning to end before it reached out and grabbed me but grab me it did. There's a lot going on on this CD and that's what I like about it - all my favourite CDs do this ("Notorious" being one of my all-time favourite albums). At the moment, I especially love the sound of "Chains", yes even the "na-nas" once I figured them out. The whole CD is a fantastic effort and I hope their reunion is as successful as these reviews suggest it might be.
The DVD was a pleasure to watch although I was hoping for more live performances. I saw the fab-five in Toronto last year and it was a fantastic show so I would have liked to re-live that moment a little longer but I believe a full concert DVD is going to be released at some point so I guess I'll have to wait for that.
It's been a while since I've enjoyed a DD album and this release was definitely worth the wait. I'd like it if the original members stuck around a little longer this time around but if this ends up being their only release it's a fabulous addition to the DD collection.
Free Music Review: 2 CDs that You Should Definitely Own Hit: 5 Stars
A welcome return from Eighties Icons Duran, Duran. "Reach Up (for the Sunrise)" is a certified smash in Canada and on the Billboard Dance charts. Toronto's CHUM Radio has been heralding the band's triumphant return to North America as their first Toronto Stadium Concert in Decades approaches. (It's also a return of sorts by Lead Man Simon LeBon to the City that he once called home. He resided in Toronto's "High Park" during the height of their Eighties Fame). Another CD that fans of Duran Duran should check out is AMBER - My Kind of World. This CD nicely complements Duran Duran's latest. The first Single, the ALT Rock infused "You Move Me" has already hit #1 Stateside on XM Radio. And the Second Single "Voodoo" is being readied for an early 2005 Commercial release. Fans should also check out the Pat Benatar-esque "Just Like That" and the Whitney Houston Meets Pat Benatar Power Ballad "Sacrificial Lamb". Billboard Magazine in it's glowing review said that Amber deserves a spot in the Mainstream. My advice? Get BOTH Duran, Duran and AMBER - My Kind of World.
Free Music Review: Great return, Great Album Hit: 5 Stars
I have to say I am more than pleased with Astronaut. They haven't had a solid album since The Wedding Album.....and it's better than that album clearly. This could be the best album they've done as Duran Duran since the original 5 were recording. The songs are well written and certainly well recorded. It will be hard to say if their old sound will sell in this current market of sh%tty manufactured pop and rap by artists that can't write a song much less play an instrument. This album should and I say should have a few hits on it. Sunrise, Taste The Summer, What Happens Tomorrow, Nice and Want You More are all radio worthy. I mean, this is not a nostalgic album just for hard core Duran Duran fans. This really is a solid album. I simply love it. If someone would have told me I'd buy this album, much less play it non-stop in my car & at home, I would have told you you were crazy. But I am. I can't get enough of it. It's one of the best albums I've bought this year....NO JOKE FOLKS. Those dissing this album are just stupid fools who don't know music.
