Free Music Review: What an amazing collection!
Hit: 5 Stars

I graduated from high school in 1986, so how could I not be a Duran Duran fan? But their late 80s/early 90s stuff never held as much appeal to me, and my interest in the band faded over the years. Happily, this amazing collection of their "Greatest" has rekindled my enthusiasm for this awesome group and their unique sound.

I attribute my love of these CD in large part to the masterful sequencing of the songs. "Is There Something I Should Know?" is not necessarily one of my top picks, but it definitely start things off right with its catchy beat. The strong rhythms continue with the next two tunes, "The Reflex" and "A View to a Kill" (I always find that the latter stays in my head for days afterward). Then, the tone of the album changes with the moody "Ordinary World," an offering from 1993's altered band that I had previously ignored but am now quite partial too, and "Save a Prayer," a sentimental favorite. Several other songs from the mega-hit album Rio come next, followed by the best two tracks from their very first album, "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth."

By this point in the CD (about halfway through), I don't even mind that there are four songs in a row from the previously-dreaded late 80s/early 90s era. The next five tunes are all more recent (1990s/2000) offerings, and to my surprise, I found each one of these to be incredibly fun, upbeat, and amazingly familiar, although there were actually two that I hadn't heard before ("All She Wants Is" and "Electric Barbarella," a homage to the movie which gave the band its name). Finally, the compilation draws to a close with "Come Undone," another gem from the group's 1993 incarnation. If you are a fan of Duran Duran in any way, shape, or form, don't hesitate to buy this CD--I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Free Music Review: THIS is the way compilations should be done
Hit: 5 Stars

Well, there's not much if anything that I can say that wouldn't be repeating what many others have said, especially the main thing that prospective buyers should be aware of. And that is the fact that Duran Duran's Greatest is the epitome of excellent compilations.

I'm not saying that they're my favorite band of all time (they're not but they're definitely one of them), but that this is just a flawlessly perfect compilation. If you've purchased at least two of those infamous 'greatest hits', 'very best of' or 'essential' albums, you know what I'm talking about. 99.99999% of them leave off at least 3 of their best songs - Top 10 hits and even #1s at that! Even most box sets leave off a big hit or two. But not Duran Duran's Greatest.

Duran Duran had 15 Top 40 hits during the 80s and early 90s, and every single one of them are here. That's all you need to know. If you've heard some Duran Duran songs you like a lot and don't want to live without, don't even THINK about thinking twice or putting this purchase off.

In closing, I'd like to mention what I like the best about Duran Duran. I'm a fool for songs where the singer draws out the words they're singing, just like Duran Duran does with the word 'night' in the following lyrics: "I light my torch and wave it for the new moon on monday and a firedance through the night." Instead of singing that word like "night", it's like "niiiiiiiiight". I LOVE that! I can't think of many things catchier in a song. And nobody uses that tactic more than Duran Duran.

My top 3 favorites of Duran Duran isn't the same as most. "Hungry Like The Wolf" is awesome, but my three favorites are: 1. Rio 2. New Moon On Monday 3. Come Undone

Free Music Review: "Why Don't You Use It, Try Not To Bruise It..."
Hit: 5 Stars

If you are a regular follower of my reviews, you've probably gathered that I'm a huge fan of 1980s' rock. Poison, Motley Crue and the best of them all Def Leppard - I love them. However, Duran Duran was a band I never really liked. True, I pretty much based on my opinion on them on one song (the dreadful James Bond theme "A View To A Kill", which I'm sure will eventually grow on me), but just their look alone also didn't appeal to me. But then I heard "The Reflex" in "American Wedding" (during Stifler's dance bar at the gay bar), and I knew that I had to have that song. Well, I purchased their new hits cd "Greatest" for that one song, but I wound up getting much more than I wanted.

"Greatest" offers pretty much all the Duran Duran you could possibly. In addition to "The Reflex" and "A View To A Kill", you get certified 1980s' classics like "Rio" (one of the best music videos ever!), "Wild Boys", "Notorious", "New Moon On Monday", "Is There Something I Should Know" and a host of others to satisfy your cravings for blissful nostalgia of the era of big hair and big hooks. Plus you get two songs from their 1993 comeback, "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone", as well as their awesome 1997 minor single "Electric Barbarella" (the title is fitting since the group actuallly took its name from the 1968 Jane Fonda classic "Barbarella"). To entice hardcore Duranies, album tracks such as the awesome "Serious" and the Prince-like "Skin Trade" (which actually was a single) have been added.

The bonus dvd is brilliant, containing their videos. Oh, those classic videos. In short, this album is highly recommendable. I would suggest purchasing it as soon as possible.

Free Music Review: Phenomenal 19 songs from Duran Duran!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have gotten several copies of "Greatest" even since it came out in late 1998! Whenever they have a sale on older Capitol Records CDs, I always get it! Duran Duran made such superb pop songs. Their hooks and musical landscapes helped defined the sounds of the '80s with the new wave sounds of the first half. South Carolina is where their songs sound the best--radio stations played their songs more during summer 1984, especially "The Reflex", "Hungry Like The Wolf" and others. I have played "Save A Prayer" countless times on this CD, "Ordinary World" merges their classic '80s sound and 1993 all into one song. I voted that for best song in the '93 Rolling Stone Readers' Poll. Nile Rodgers gave DD their best work, perhaps his best post-Chic period of hits! Two songs, "All She Wants Is" (1988) and "Electric Barbarella" (1997)sound identical, more like brothers, but dynamic danceable songs! The '86 song, "Notorious" still sounds dynamite. Their glamorous look and their fashions in their videos blended well with the music that they performed. The songs blend so beautifully for 78 minutes! Although I didn't get into them until 1983, the two early songs from 80-81, "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth" were also good. "Serious" from 1990 doesn't grab me like the others, but it's okay. With their having a new album in 2004 or 2005, this feel full circle to hear their past hits on this album. I hope the new album will be just as much a classic as the '80s hits they have enjoyed in their music career. To Simon, the Taylors, Nick and other members past and present, thank you for the phenomenal music on this album!!!!
