Free Music Review: Highly underrated album proves itself consistent with all other Duran works

The bottom line on this album is that it's probably one of the most consistent Duran Duran albums out there, along with their debut album DURAN DURAN, RIO, and ASTRONAUT. I've recently rediscovered NOTORIOUS and found it much better off than when I last left it.
Unfortunately, drummer Roger Taylor left Duran Duran right before the sessions for this 1986 album started, so he is sorely missed. Though Roger could never be replaced, ace session drummer and ex-Average White Band member Steve Ferrone is fantastic (he currently drums for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) and lends some very forceful work on the skins. Duran guitarist Andy Taylor actually left during sessions for the album, but his work can be heard on "American Science" and "A Matter of Feeling." Two other tracks feature Andy, though nobody in the know can recollect which, but most think it's probably parts on "Skin Trade" and "Proposition".
Duran tinkered with their sound on this album produced by ex-Chic member Nile Rodgers (who adds a lot of guitar on the album as well), with a decidedly more funk-like groove incorporated into almost every song. Even so, some of Duran's finest recorded work appears on NOTORIOUS, and Simon Lebon has never sounded better. Classic cuts include the addictive title track (#2 in 1986), the mysterious "American Science", the reflective "A Matter of Feeling" (supposedly written for the departed Roger Taylor), the rocking "Vertigo" and the funky "Skin Trade" (#39 in early 1987). Honorable mention goes to "Hold Me", the cold and dark "Winter Marches On" and "Proposition". Even the funkified "Meet El Presidente" and "So Misled", though the weakest tracks on the album, seem to sound better in hindsight than they did in 1986.
NOTORIOUS is an intriguing album because of its back story---Andy leaving in the middle of its recording, the slinky and awesome bass lines by John Taylor on almost every song, the addition of session guitarist Warren Cuccurullo who later became a permanent member of the band through 2001, Nick Rhodes and his subtle yet effective keyboard work, and the artistic risk of Lebon, Rhodes and John Taylor altering their sound while trying to retain past glories. All this notwithstanding, NOTORIOUS was still able to move over a million copies upon its release.
Of course, the Duran story has come full circle, with Andy and Roger back in the band and a top 20 album (ASTRONAUT) and sold out arena tour already behind them in 2005. The song "Notorious" has been featured in the reunited original lineup's concerts, and continues to shine, even more so with Andy and Roger playing on the track in a live setting. Even Puff Daddy himself, P. Diddy, sampled the title track. Here's hoping that the Fab Five tackle more NOTORIOUS-era songs on future concert tours.
Highly recommended and hoping for a remastered edition soon.
