Hit: 5 Stars

I had no clue that Duran Duran had a new album coming out until I read a review here in the Orlando Weekly. The Weekly surprisingly said that Red Carpet Massacre may be one of Duran Duran's important albums. That made me curious to pick up the album which I did. I was such a big fan of the Astronaut album because it was such a refreshing sound to hear something new from the original members. That album was filled with catchy melodies and grooves.

I listened to the first track of "The Valley" with the first couple of bars of a drum machine and a basic synth. My first thought was "Aww man Timberland and Danja are dumbing down their sound. But then the next layer of guitar with vocals brought it home to that Duran Duran sound as the next layer of harmonies comes in and then more synth sound is layered. As the layers keep becoming added, the track consumes you and brings you up to date of a modern, current Duran Duran. As the song moves along, you hear more of the band come in with more synth sounds. Very futuristic sounding. Now, being a big DD fan in the 80's listening to Rio and Seven and the Ragged Tiger, if back in 1983 then wondering what Duran Duran would sound like in the year 2007....I would really believe that this album is accurate to what the band should sound like in this century. Yet, they don't lose credibility with their style. If you have followed their history of albums, then you will know that their sound has always changed every 2 albums but still keeping catchy melodies.

One of the Duran Duran's hardest, driven upbeat songs in a long while in my opinion is the title track, "Red Carpet Massacre". This is definitely driving music and my favorite on this album.

"Falling Down" is definitely within style of classic Duran Duran sound. I will have to give credit to JT for writing a catchy tune that matches the band without making them sound cheesy. Definitely gets my nod.

"Box Full O' Honey" is a very organic track with emphasis on guitar and piano. Great uptempo track with a drum patterns that tease you and flow with great arrangements of change ups. The variations of the chorus and verse work well. This is more live instrument and not too much emphasis on synths.

Tracks such as "Tempted" and "Zoom In" are futuristic club, groove driven songs that have great breaks and transitions. Yes, these remind me of the days of "All She Wants" days. Synth driven techno road journey.

"She's Too Much" is a mid-tempo track that reminds me of "Wedding Album" style with head-nodding groove. It is a great balance of synths and light guitars. Very catchy song from the pre-chorus to the harmonies when the chorus comes in. If you stripped the drums and you made this an acoustic version, I think that it would sound very much like an early Beatles song especially in the chorus.

"Dirty Great Monster" is a dark Creepy moving song that reminds me of their medazzaland/Pop Trash albums. I loved those albums even though they were under rated.

"Last Man Standing" is a bouncy slow moving track that seems to work. This reminds me of their first album days.

I know that some people may be knocking this album for being over-produced with synths blah blah blah. In my opinion, this album works because if you notice from their beginnings of their New Wave days, that they were synth driven with hints of disco beats and grooves. You can't knock them for using drum machines because if you listen to "The Chaffeur" you can hear old school drum machines in the beginning of the song with synths all over that song. Same with "Save a Prayer"...heavy on synths....even back then, though now sounds retro, they had a futuristic quality with an exotic mystique to them.

Overall, this album has really grown on me. Though, i think that the weak tracks being "Skin Divers" (for Timbaland makin' an appearance, that to me didn't need to be necessary) and "Night Runner"...though the later does sound like an updated song that could have been on a Seven and the ragged Tiger album. Looking forward to where this band will take us next. I would very much be interested in hearing the Reportage album if they ever decide to release it.

Red Carpet Massacre (Snys) Poster

2007 release from the '80s icons, an album that marks an all time creative high in the band's illustrious 29-year career. With tracks produced by Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, Red Carpet Massacre is an album that steps outside the box and offers a modern look at Duran Duran. Features the first single, 'Falling Down', which was produced and co-written with Timberlake, a life-long Duran fan.
It happens only two tracks in: Just when you're re-acquainting yourself with Simon Le Bon's sexy whine and settling in for a disc full of digestible, modernized new wave, Red Carpet Massacre takes a turn toward the Timberlake-like. By the time you reach track eight, the sizzling instrumental "Tricked Out," the effect is so pronounced you can't be sure whose chocolate got into whose peanut butter. But you do know this, and with more certainty than you once placed in the power of the "Hungry Like the Wolf" video to get you through your teen-age day: Massacre is one hot record. Timbaland, the brilliant knob-twister behind Timberlake's FutureSex/Love Sounds, as well as his protegé, Danja, imbue it with buoyancy and way-past-midnight moodiness; on a couple of tracks, most notably "Skin Divers," which includes a short rap verse, Timbaland pitches in on vocals, and on a couple of others, he taps Timberlake to help out. That the contributions of that tag-team of hitmakers take nothing away from the tightness and characteristic chic of the band--that they enhance the hypnotic sheen of Duran Duran, rather than subjugate it--makes a certain sense. After all, if Timberlake brought sexy back, it had probably only been missing since Duran Duran's mid-80s heyday. --Tammy La Gorce
