Free Music Notes for Rio

Free Music Review: A Duran Duran Classic
Hit: 4 Stars

This CD is perfect for someone who loves the Duran Duran songs "Rio" and "Hungry Like The Wolf". If you could only have one Duran album, this is probably it.

Free Music Review: Now if only the American version were on CD.....
Hit: 3 Stars

Thanks to J.Brady's review, I now know why this version of Rio does not match either my vinyl LP copy or cassette. As both of those formats are harder to replace once they wear out, I was greatly looking forward to getting Rio on CD and playing the hell out of it. Boy was I shocked to hear the CD mix. As in "What the hell?!!!" shocked.

"Bassically" {pun intended} the bass is not as pronounced on tracks like "Rio" or "Lonely In Your Nightmare", and even "Hungry Like the Wolf". Track two, "My Own Way", varies from the American version in that the keyboard track that underlies the openning bass track, is missing and doesn't kick in until the whole band does. All in all, if you grew up listening to this album, the CD will not sound like the album you remember well. That isn't to say the CD is not good. Its decent and you'll get to hear what the rest of the world heard back in 1982. It'll just leave you wondering, like me, if you can find someone to burn you a CD copy of your vinyl album.

Oh, and regarding the poster who says dump Rio in favor of Rush's "2112": I have both and enjoy both equally, thank you very much, and would easily see Duran Duran one night after seeing Rush the night before!

Free Music Review: enough with the million versions!
Hit: 3 Stars

Believe it or not, I am 19 years old and consider Duran Duran one of my favorite bands of all time. I first fell in love with RIO from finding an old vinyl at my local thrift store. I instantly fell in love with it.The problem with this remastered version is it's not the same. Why are there practically a shortened version on every song on this one. I like the remastering but I wished it could have been a bit more bassy. My Own Way is striped of synth solos and Simons echo about broadway, which were my favorite parts of the song! Lonely's piano is covered up and overall song shortened to a mere three minutes compared to the vinyls five minutes. Hungry like the wolf is a terribly shortened version!! Hold back the rain is shortened and the bass is to loud, not enough guitar on all songs in general(WHYWHYWHY). New Religion is good except for its slower pace. The only songs spared are Last Chance,Save a, and Chauffeur. I hate to fuss but why did they change it. I would really like to know how to get my hands on the CD\vinyl version. In summary, good job but why do they not keep one original version. That is all!!

Free Music Review: Why mess with success???
Hit: 3 Stars

I agree with everyone who says that Rio is a fantastic album, but why did Duran Duran have to go and mess with several of the tracks when they remastered it? "Hold Back the Rain," in particular, has some really cheese-bag keyboards imposed heavily over what used to be an interesting guitar track. They obviously tried to "disco up" the remaster, but only succeeded in ruining a few awesome tracks. I'm particularly upset about the fact that this is not mentioned anywhere that I might be able to know it before buying the CD. Two thumbs down for messing around with an album that was perfect the way it was when it was first released.

Free Music Review: Where are the remixed versions?
Hit: 2 Stars

Like many people are trying to say here, this cd doesn't have the versions which were remixed by David Kershenbaum. The vinyl version released in North America when this came out had remixed versions of Rio, Lonely in your Nightmare, Save a Prayer, Hold Back the Rain, Hungry Like the Wolf, and My Own Way. If you listen to the vinyl version and this cd, you can tell, some of the differences are pretty obvious, others are more subtle. My understanding is the band themselves preferred the remixed versions to the originals that this CD has.

Unfortunately, Capitol didn't give us the remixed versions, so those of us who grew up in the 80's loving the vinyl/cassette versions of Rio will have to settle for our vinyl copies until Capitol records gets off their butts and issues them remastered...something that they should have done in the first place!
