Free Music Review: "You Make Me Feel Alive, Alive, Alive!"
Hit: 5 Stars

It was originally released in May 1982, but Duran Duran's second album, "Rio," didn't catch fire on these American shores until a year later, thanks to the breakthrough single and video "Hungry Like the Wolf." It was perfect timing for the British group: the year was 1983, during which MTV culture was taking shape and revolutionized the way we listen to music. That, coupled with the group's stylishly produced videos and new romantic-inspired pop, helped make Duran Duran such an important staple in 1980s music. Here, virtually none of the 80s cheese you find from trendier groups appears on this CD. There's the dynamic title track (replete with a sax solo from Andy Hamilton), the seductive "The Chauffer," the uptempo rocker "Hold Back the Rain," and the funkified "My Own Way" (which differs from the original mix on the 1981 single). "Rio" is one of the first LPs I ever purchased (I still have the original vinyl), and it gives me great teenage memories. On its own merits, the record really deserves 4 stars, but it gets an extra one for its sentimental value. (By the way, this remastered version is the original pressing of "Rio" that was released overseas, and not the remixed version that was once available in America.)

Free Music Review: Their Finest
Hit: 5 Stars

There's no question about it, Rio is their finest work to date. For me, it's tied for first with Astronaut. This album has got all the right sounds and all the right moves. You can't mention Duran Duran without bringing up "Rio" or "Hungry like the Wolf" or those classic videos that we still can't seem to get over.

Of course, this album isn't complete without the memorable "Rio" and "Hungry like the Wolf," true songs that define an era, all new wave, all 80s. There's also the deep and harmonious "Save a Prayer" which also is fun listen and another classic. Let's not forget upbeat rockers "Hold back the rain" and "New Religion," some of their best, the smooth and seductive, "Chauffer" the funky "My own way" melodic "Lonely in your Nightmare" and "Last chance on the stairway," one of my personal favorites. There's not one song you can dislike.

I truly do enjoy this album, it's fantastic from beginning to end. As you can see: Pretty looking guys+cool music+memorable singles=1 Phenomenal band. Rio got them noticed here in the states and launched them into history. And now, they're among icons. Every Duran Duran fan must have this album, newcomer and life-long alike!

Free Music Review: Her Name is Rio Damn It!
Hit: 5 Stars

The first Duran Duran album was moody, danceable pop with some rock sensibility sprinkled around for good measure. It was a new sound. "New Romantic" was the coined phrase of the day. Then they followed up the first album with a smash hit called "Is There Something I Should Know?" which was a stand-alone single that had all the pieces in under four minutes. They were stars.

Rio ups the ante. More guitars, more melodic pop, more suggestive phrasing and some more rock added to the mix. You get the moody experiemental pieces like "The Chauffer" and "Save A Prayer" along side some burners like "Hold Back The Rain" and "Rio." "Hungry Like The Wolf" is a killer single and "New Religion" really gives them some street credibility as songwriters. "New Religion" became a concert staple they still play today and for good reason. It's a great rock track. Something no one had heard so clearly in any previous Duran Duran tune.

Even the "filler" here like "Last Chance on that Stairway" and "Lonely in your Nightmare" work very very well. This is Class A pop music for 1982 or any era. Great stuff!

Free Music Review: Get on the bandwagon now, before they become popular again -
Hit: 5 Stars

It's very easy to dismiss Duran Duran, and up until now, it has been the norm. As one who didn't mind the Thatcherite politics or the excesses of the early videos ("Girls on Film" was art, dammit!), I sentimentally love this album. I have played it so many times I have lost count.

But, more importantly, it is the Duran Duran album that matters. It is musically complex in ways that were scarcely matched throughout the entire 1980s - and is still refreshing to listen to in the present.

Now that Duran Duran are coming back together with the original line-up (Le Bon, Rhodes, and three Taylors), it is a good time to re-explore the early Duran years and see just how underrated this band was. This really is the best that they ever sounded, and their only true "masterpiece" album. Duran Duran were a singles band, true - and they were never better as a band than with three Taylors. This album, along with Duran Mk. I's swansong "A View to a Kill", is as good as they get, and sounds fantastic remastered. And, for the uninitiated, I promise this will sound great upon first listen!

Free Music Review: Not the true Original remastering of the LP
Hit: 5 Stars

Duran Duran's RIO is an incredible masterpiece, which perfectly marries the crystal clear treble with heart thumping bass and pounding rythmic drum lines. This is however, not a remastering of the original as the title would suggest. For those true DD fans out there who can remember the album cuts. You will hear a difference in the production of many tracks on this CD. Including,"My Own Way", the fade out being significantly reduced on "Lonely in Your Nightmare", additional keyboard chops added in "Hold Back the Rain", but the great keyboard beginning being replaced with just a short bass punch. "Save a Prayer" is also cut down and reduced. The whole reason I purchased the CD is I thought it would be the true representation of the original LP recording in 1982, as advertised. Instead, I was disappointed to find it was exactly just like the CD version I bought in 1987. Despite this disappointment, the CD is still one of my all time favorites from the opening keyboard fade in on "Rio" to the conclusion of dangling keys on "The Chauffer".
