Free Music Review: More obscure but brilliant primitive HM

Obscure hard rock knows no boundaries, from the super rare early 80's NWOBHM stuff, to the bands that went on to make it big and have a phase of their career no one knows about (Scorpions, Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Tubes, Rod Stewart) as well as the early 70's blues to here and back folk/prog inspired hard rock blur (heavy rock groups of the time weren't afraid to try different things), there are so many sounds that people are unaware of. Dust was an early 70's NYC based trio, of which the drummer Marc Bell became Marky Ramone as the Ramones 2nd drummer, and the group's bass player Kenny Aaronson joined Stories and did session work for the likes of Foghat, Dave Edmunds, Bob Dylan, Sammy Hagar and many more, and then guitar player Ritchie Wise (and the bands producer) certain fans of another NYC rock band might find familiar on the credits (yes, they produced Kiss' first 2 albums), were a band called Dust. Their debut album is pretty awesome, although the production is a little dry and murky and the songs arent quite as memorable as the follow up Hard Attack. Opener 'Pull Away/Many Times' is great, as is some of their more softer touches like Walk In The Soft Rain, Thusly Spoken and the (sounds like it coulda been on Let It Bleed) country-ish How Many Horses. The band enjoyed an electic mix of soft and hard, much like their British counterparts Budgie. The heavier numbers Suicide, the burning instrumental Ivory and the multi sectioned Learning To Die is Heavy Metal in its most primitive and unheard state. It was born on obscure records by the likes of Dust and others like Bang, Budgie, UFO, Lucifer's Friend, Humble Pie, Mountain, Bloodrock, Montrose and Hawkwind. Shell out the extra dough for Dust's self titled debut and the classic Hard Attack album. Music like this just doesnt happen anymore, sadly. Outside of the concept to where you'll wonder why these groups are often forgotten inspite of Sabbath's and Zeppelin's continued appearence on the throne of heavy rock, the tunes are just enjoyable without the controversey of historical signifance. Although to an extent they are an aqcuired taste. The production is rough (which is the point) and these guys arent playing for commercial purposes. Just to make music, wheather you want to call it hard rock or heavy metal or whatever. But for fans of metal that wanna look past the same ole same ole Metallica and Priest, give the forefathers of the genre Dust and others mentioned above a spin. It's certianly not pop.
