If you know music, you must have, at some point, stopped in your tracks and thought, "Jesus, it is amazing how much widely popular music Burt Bacharach wrote." If you subtracted everything but the singles he wrote with Hal David for Dionne Warwick, he would still be one of our most beloved composers.
Most who know have probably had this notion, but have you ever stopped to think why? Bacharach was, along with only Jimmy Webb, one of the pop composers of the era who wrote music that sounded like no one else's. You know his sound: that little trumpet that pops up, those chord structures that could only be our pal Burt. Nowadays it is a cheap marketing cliche to tout an artist has a "sound all their own." But Bacharach truly did.
Listen to the hit singles and you'll find this, but to find it even more, check out this Casino Royale Soundtrack from 1967, which, in fact, has a hit single, "The Look Of Love." sung by Dusty Springfield.
The non hits--as is "Look Of Love," here are handled by Herb Alpert and the Tijuna Brass. If you want to know why even King Crimson and Coltrane rollers like me have a secret soft place for late 1960s top forty radio, it ain't Gary Pucket or Bobby Goldsboro. The reason is heavy hitters like Bacharach, Springfield and Albert.
It is not pop and it is not classical and it is not jazz and it is all of those and who cares! It's Burt.
