Free Music Notes for Dusty in MemphisFree Music Review: always complaints Hit: 5 Stars
this album is brilliant. even if i don't listen to every single track, i listen to like 98% of it, and for me that's alot of an album.
i am very sick of people complaining with everything here, vocal quality should not be "improved" what does that even mean? louder? it sounds wonderful, the atmosphere of this album is second to none, incorporating a lushness that was chased after by many of the pop-psych/baroque pop scene of the time (to these ears atleast).
it is the classic it has been called for all these years, more people in the out of touch u.s. need to be in touch with good music, this country has lost it's taste for great music, in the majority sense, i don't think it ever had it. i mean the zombies should of been bigger, pet sounds was a flop, and dusty was not recognized here as well, what more can i say.
Free Music Review: Can I Give It More Than Five Stars? Hit: 5 Stars
This is the recording that finally made me understand the difference between an "artist" and a popular singer. The songs on this CD nearly all sound like they could have been recorded in the '90s, not in 1969. Most people will only know "Son of a Preacher Man," but that isn't even my favorite cut on the album. This CD has been an influence to a lot of other artists, some of whom have credited it. Elvis Costello called it the second greatest album released on Atlantic in the '60s, second only to Aretha Franklin's debut album. It is an amazing combination of soul, perfect production and an artist who always cared deeply about the quality of her work. I've got tons of music, most of it from current artists, but this is one of my top five favorites in my collection.
Free Music Review: How did I never buy this until recently Hit: 5 Stars
I always loved Dusty Springfield. Maybe it was her eye-liner. Maybe it was that blond helmet that she wore for hair. I'm sure her voice had something to do with it too, but after her first flurry of hit singles, I wrote her off. There was too much else to listen to--Bowie, Bolan, heroine inflected Marianne Faithful. Just recently I broke down and ordered this, probably because with the price, it guaranteed me free shipping from amazon. What a great cd! Some of it sounds a little dated (like some sitar solo in the middle of nowhere), but overall it's just pure Dusty. Her voice is like a good cup of tea: soothing and invigorating at the same time. You don't have to worry for the length of one very long cd. You just have to sit back and enjoy one of pop's greatest voices.
Free Music Review: There is No Easy Way Down after you have experienced this Hit: 5 Stars
I believe that there is just way too much hype about "Son of a Preacher Man"; granted, it is a great tune, however there are other wonderful gems of songs that will make their way to your soul such as "Just a Little Lovin'", "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore", "Don't Forget About Me", and most especially "No Easy Way Down" and "I Can't Make It Alone". These songs reflect Dusty's uncanny ability to make what ever style of music her own. She is the one whose style of singing created the term "blue-eyed soul", but she can swing and belt out a tune when the mood strikes her. I guarantee this classic will stay in your CD library.
Free Music Review: SIMPLY A MASTERPIECE THAT GROWS ON YOU Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is constantly on "top 10" lists and with good reason. I usually don't like what the critics "tell" me to like - for instance, I still don't "get" Joni Mitchell. LOL. I finally bought this CD at a big sale at Tower Record here in NYC - for $9.99 I thought I could not go wrong. I have to admit my expectations for this CD were high, and partly because of that, it did not deliver at first, but with repeated playings I fell under Dusty's spell. Her simple soul style of singing is timeless. In fact, it does not seem possible that this was recorded almost 35 years ago. If you liked this CD, try Lisa Stansfield's self-titled CD from 1996 - another gem.
