Dutch Courage's "Chicago" EP is a delightful little gem. The VERY low budget packaging is just a cardboard foldout with a black & silver lithograph on chocolate colored paper with the songs listed on the back page. The credits don't list the musicians, but the lead singer has a puffy little voice with limited range that sounds like Volebeats Up North or early-era Kinks. The 2 minute + opener is a great little tune with its simple piano riff before it blows into a band arrangement with a great bass line. The chorus is great date mix, "Hey, doll, drag me around in that little black car all over town; There's a pretty good chance that we'll go too far & but that's all." "Wicker Park" has a pulsing keyboard riff repeated as the singer goes, "I was coming unglued & my bandages were coming apart" before heading off into vocal stratosphere out of his range. "Torchsong" has a catchy piano riff repeated to the unsettling lyric, "Hey darling, can't you see, you're as good as dead to me, in other words you're on your own." The final track "Red Letter Day" starts with someone coughing into the mic as an acoustic guitar strums. Its gentle sound is juxtaposed with the jarring lyric, "This has been a red letter day for kings & queens & communist states; I lie still for every dog has its day, I was told." Dutch Courage boasts an intriguing sound. "Chicago" is rough cut, but surges with creative impulse that makes it sound unique. I like it, particularly "Little Black Car." Enjoy!
