Free Music Notes for All Over the World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]Free Music Review: Not definitive ELO comp All Over the World Hit: 4 StarsI, too was baffled by the omissions on this ELO comp. I wrote to a watchdog column to get answers.
Here's what I was told. This comp initially was only intended for the UK. Hence only the hit singles in that country were chosen. That is why Can't Get it Out of My Head is not on this - it didn't chart overseas. That is why Wild West Hero and Rockaria are on this.
It was then released worldwide with the track selection intact. Sounds plausible, and yet, the tracklisting does vary in Holland and Japan. So...back to the same question=why not vary it here?
Why the remake of Xanadu and not the UK hit with Olivia Newton John?
Skimpy liner notes and a slightly spotty track selection (no Do Ya, Twilight, Calling America, Roll Over Beethoven, 10538 Overture (the latter two both charted well in the UK), and the above Can't Get it Out of My Head knock this down one star. The four stars are for what IS on here and the remastering which is superb!
Free Music Review: All Over the World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] Hit: 4 StarsAll Over the World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra[ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]~ E.L.O. is a very good compilation from one of the most successfull bands of the 70's and one hears their music it is not so hard to understand why. The band is composed of amazing vocalists, amazing lyrics from the mind and hand of Jeff Lynne. This band is in fact able to write lyrics that speak to the heart. As far as getting 4 out of 5 stars can seem a bit odd consedering the accolades I just piled on them. Still and all 4 stars is not bad, and in fact quite good. This is a very good album and the 4 stars are quite well deserved. To bad their logo looks cheap and the book-let is a trevesty with boring photos, tacky clothes and font that is quite boring. Still I love this music and I rank this amongst one of the better bands of the 70's right after masters such as Bee Gees and ABBA.
Free Music Review: Gruce???????????????? Hit: 4 Stars E.L.O was one of the few bands of the seventies that was able to combine Beatles inspired melodies with Art rock pretensions. Their ability to reach out to the masses got them in a lot of hot water with the critics of the day who raked them over the coals for their cheesy laser shows and frisbee inspired logo. Musically however, the band was a lot better than they ever got credit for and it is nice to see a collection that finally gives them their due. All the great hits are here from Evil Woman to Rock n Roll is King as is Xanadu the title track to one of the most insipid and stupefyingly dumb movies ever made (It makes Cant Stop the Music look like the Godfather)and one wonders what made kind of cash was thrown at them to be involved in that project. Couple of omissions that would have been nice but did not make the cut are "Fire on High" a nice instrumental with a soaring strings to move it along and how about "So Serious" and "Calling America" from the bands overlooked Balance of Power CD. Other than that it is a good collection and is worthy of anyone who likes seventies pop or pop in general.
Free Music Review: ELO Still Rock! Hit: 5 StarsAs another reviewer has mentioned, "All Over The World" is a fantastic introduction to one of the central bands of the 1970's and early 1980's. With a sound all of their own, ELO produced some of the most original and unique sounds I have ever heard.
ELO mix rock/pop with a bit of classical, and the mix is heady. These guys could still hold their own in contemporary music, and their enduring fan-base is testament to their appeal. In addition to that, ELO can sing like no one else, and just have an awesome sound.
Bottom line, for a sound that is unique and original, ELO's "All Over the World" is a great place to start with a great band.
Free Music Review: Another one? Hit: 4 StarsThis is the third hits collection put out by Legacy for ELO. The third time's a charm, right? Well, almost. I guess if I were a big fan of ELO, I'd grab 2000's 3CD Flashback collection. Granted in 2003, The Essential ELO was released with 15 songs, but this latest collection has 20. For some reason, some of the 'Essential' songs aren't the very best, because they have been omitted.
All of that aside, getting 20 hits by one of the most progressive rock bands of the seventies ain't so bad. Some of the effects heavy numbers will make you chuckle due to their use of primitive electronic effects. All and all, this collection packs all you need to know about ELO. You'll be surprised at how many song you actually know too.
