Free Music Notes for Hell Freezes OverFree Music Review: The Eagles Big Comeback Hit: 5 Stars
After 14 years apart The Eagles got back together in 1994 to record 4 new tracks and perform in concert for a TV special. "Hell Freezes Over" is the result of this project and in my opinion this is a must own for any fan of The Eagles. 3 of the 4 new songs are great ones. Don Henley's "Get Over It" is a great rocker and pretty much sums up my philosophy on life. Tim Schmit's "Love Will Keep Us Alive" is a rather average song, but it is brought to a higher level by Schmit's unique vocal style. No one cans sing songs like this quite like him. Glenn Frey's "The Girl From Yesterday" harkens back to the bands early country rock roots, and is a good tune with great lyrics. The other new track "Learn To Be Still" by Henley does not do a lot for me. The live section of the album is solid from start to finish. In fact I would say that this material blows the "Eagles Live" album from 1980 out of the water. The recording is pristine and the performances just about perfect. The band does an all acoustic version of Hotel California that incorporates a nice twist on the original song. My all time favorite Eagles song "The Last Resort" is majestic and even better than the studio version, and serves as the crowning moment on the album. "Tequila Sunrise", "Wasted Time", "Pretty Maids All In A Row", "I Can't Tell You Why", "Take It Easy", "In The City", "Life In The Fast Lane", and "Desperado" all appear here and all sound great. Don Henley's solo hit "New York Minute" is also included. This album would serve as a fine introduction to anyone looking to explore The Eagles. It also proved that the band was back in a big way. They have continued to tour on a fairly regular basis ever since.
Free Music Review: Evidently, They DID "Get Over It!" and then some! Hit: 5 Stars
Well, "the GUYS" did decide to "Get Over It", and get down to "The Heart Of The Matter"; and weren't we,the fans the true beneficiaries of THAT attitudeand fact! "Get Over It" just slammed me back in time to prime Eagles full-tiltrock, and proved just once again what these guys are made of. (Also, the "social commentary" inherent in it tickled me. D. Henley at his forte' perchance?) The new stuff was pretty impressive, but then Timothy B. Schmit"s soaring soprano always did give me goosebumps before, as it did exquisitely on "Love Will Keep Us Alive." (as did their omnipresent, never disappointing harmonizing.) Also absolutely ADORED their re-workings of their "classics", acoustics and "paringthem down", plus slowing them down a tad worked wonderfully. And of course, being the inveterate perfectionists that they are, the sound was impeccable; whether it was their trademark rockers or ballads. I, personally, had been wishing, and hoping, and praying that "the Reunion" would occur for a LONG time. There wasn't one ioata of disappointment in me on ANY level concerning THIS cd. As far as I'm concerned, this baby is a "must have", stand-on-it's-own-laurels-beauty"; no matter whether you already own their complete (up to then, at least) discorophy or not! As I do, but I sure wouldn't part with this baby, no matter what I had priorly owned,up to; and including then. Period."Restore your soul music" indeed, as well as giving me a huge upsurge of faith, in general. I want to thank them personally for that. Guess I did, huh?
Free Music Review: Flawless Talent Hit: 5 Stars
Hell Freezes Over has to be one of the best reunion albums ever made. After a band breaks up, it is rare to get "the sound" back. The Eagles not only still have their "sound", but have added a distinct maturity to that sound. They did have a few new recordings on this album, "New York Minute", "Learn To Be Still", "Get Over It", "The Girl From Yesterday", and "Love Will Keep Us Alive" that were pretty good. I don't care for "Get Over It" as an Eagle song, not that it isn't good, it is just a new sound for the Eagles. "Love Will Keep Us Alive" was more of the Eagles style - a smooth ballad type song. In comparison would be "I Can't Tell You Why", also the smooth flowing ballad type song.
Their (the band's) other songs from the past were done in their usual excellence. "Hotel California", their most famous song, is probably the best on the album. I really liked the instrumental music they added before going into the song. It gives one a "taste" of what is to come. And just when you think a song is flawless, it gets better - Now THAT IS TALENT!
Many of the lyrics are consistent ballad type songs on this album. And it is a must for any Eagle/ballad music lover. Just for the simple fact the band said they would never get together again is reason to give this album a listen.
Another release by the Eagles, "The Long Run" is an excellent album as well. A song that became a favorite from this album was "Sad Cafe" because of the sultry sound of the saxaphone.
In trying to compare another group to the Eagles, I found few. But a band from the 70's come as close as I can find - "America".
Free Music Review: (4.5 stars) HELL FREEZES OVER ! (and it's The Eagles best album, too) Hit: 5 Stars
The Eagles' Hell Freezes Over (1994) really brings it all together for Eagles fans. Mostly, it's a live performance, but there are four new studio cuts included, too.
The new songs include a rocker (Get Over It) and a ballad (Learn To Be Still) from Don Henley, a Poco-sounding love song (Love Will Keep Us Alive) sung by Timothy B. Schmidt, and a country tune (The Girl From Yesterday) by Glenn Frey. These all sound solid, and it's a nice way to open an album of old favorites performed live by the recently reunited Eagles.
The live set is mostly acoustic, and it's main focus is on the Hotel California era (5 of the 11 live songs). There's a very good unplugged version of Hotel Califonia, and good performances of Wasted Time, The Last Resort, and Joe Walsh's Pretty Maids All In A Row. Then they rock out a bit on HC's Life In The Fast Lane.
Timothy B. Schmidt's vocals are in the spotlight again on I Can't Tell You Why, and Don Henley sings the intriguing New York Minute from his solo album, End Of The Innocence.
Joe Walsh plays slide guitar and sings In The City from the movie soundtrack of The Warriors, and The Eagles album, The Long Run.
They do unplugged versions of old favorites Tequilla Sunrise, Take It Easy, and close the album with Desperado.
Hell Freezes Over has a laid-back, intimate, and celebratory feel to it. It was recorded for MTV in Burbank, CA, in front of a respectful and appreciative audience, and it sounds clear, crisp, and joyful. It's also The Eagles best album.
Free Music Review: Possibly the Greatest CD ever made Hit: 5 Stars
The Eagles are one of those timeless bands whose music can appeal to anybody. Hell Freezes over is the finest example of the Eagles. All the songs on this CD are spectacular and deserve special mention, but the remake of Hotel California is the most brilliant. It is far better thant the original, and that is saying a lot. If you weren't an Eagles fan before, the new Hotel California will win you over. I enjoy listening to this CD when I'm traveling for a while on the highway, it relaxes and soothes you. If you like James Taylor or Fleetwood Mac you MUST listen to this CD. Hell Freezes Over is a great CD for anybody. In a world of horrible music such as Eminem, Britney Spears, and American Idol, it is nice to see that the classics still live on. Just like cars used to be built to last so was music. The Eagles are still listened to today (Farewell One tour ticket sales indicate the massive extent of this). Like new cars which are flashier and more high tech, but not built to last, so is new music. Computerized beats and effects are used in place of beautiful acoustic chords. New music is designed to be catchy but has no lasting appeal (spice girls anyone? or how about new kids on the block?). The Eagles are a band you will listen to over and over again because the songs do not get old. If you want to see what American Music truely is then you owe it to yourself to buy this CD.
