Free Music Review: What ya don't know about Money could be costing ya plenty!

One compact disc is incapable of truly showcasing Eddie Money's superior talent. It would most likely take a box set. However, there have been several attempts to make the most out of 74 minutes. First there was "Sound of Money - Greatest Hits". Containing 13 tracks, only half of which were written by Eddie, the album offered some (NOT all) of his biggest commercial hits of the '80s, as well as "Baby Hold On" and "Two Tickets" from the '70s, but completely overlooked some of his better and more personal self-penned material in favor of several new songs written by the likes of Diane Warren. Not that anything DIANE WARREN writes is bad -- but still.... This is supposed to be EDDIE MONEY's greatest hits. Where is Eddie's childhood anthem "Wanna Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star"? What about "Trinidad", "Maybe I'm A Fool", and "Gimme Some Water", to name a few? At the time of its release, Mr. Money himself publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the "Sound of Money". His perceived lack of recognition is what fueled his next project, "Right Here", making it one of his best albums to date (though again underappreciated).

Next there was "Good As Gold", which is so BAD that I'm not even going to talk about it.

Lastly there was "Super Hits". A seemingly cheap production, "Super Hits" only had 10 songs and, although they were decent choices, their sound quality suffered from digital distortion. Not so SUPER after all.

It looked as though Eddie Money would never have a greatest hits collection he could be proud of. It looked as though fans and appreciators of good music the world over would never have that ONE disc they could listen to, over and over. That ONE disc they could keep in their car, in their office....

Well, I am thankful to say, that ONE disc is finally here: "The Best of Eddie Money". While it's not perfect (as I mentioned earlier, "...box set"), it's pretty close. And it's ten times better than those other three pitiful excuses for a halfway decent compilation.

"The Best of Eddie Money" has 16 songs, all of which are essentials. The songs have all been digitally remastered, so they sound better than they ever have. "No Control" and "Rock and Roll the Place" are both live promo versions previously unavailable on compact disc. The tray card and booklet feature cool, never-before-seen publicity shots. Plus, Sal Nunziato has some really nice things to say in the liner notes.

Judging from past experience, I didn't expect too much from this release. Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised. My only complaint is with what is NOT on the disc. While "The Best of Eddie Money" is a totally acceptable summation of Eddie's first 15 years (his years with Columbia), and it does contain a significant amount of his self-penned material, there are still some songs which are sorely missing. First off, there is nothing from the "Right Here" album. And we still don't have "Gimme Some Water", "Club Michelle", "The Love In Your Eyes", "Endless Nights", "Get A Move On", or "The Big Crash". In addition, something from the "Unplug It In" album would have been nice.

Anyway, I guess beggars can't be choosers. My suggestion is that you buy all of Eddie Money's albums and listen to them repeatedly. If you just want to try some, pick up "Eddie Money" (his 1977 self-titled debut), "Life For The Taking" (his 1978 follow-up), "Playing For Keeps" (his 1980 flop), "No Control" (his 1982 big seller), and "Right Here" (his 1991 masterwork). If you're wondering what Eddie is up to these days, you might want to check out his newest album, "Ready Eddie" (1999).

And of course, don't discount "The Best of Eddie Money".
