Free Music Review: Fantastic job of capturing the essence
Hit: 5 Stars

Start anywhere. I like "The Wolf" as a starting track. It sets the mood of "Into the Wild" perfectly - foreboding, yet expansive. All the tracks on this soundtrack set a mood, usually contemplative (Society), sometimes resigned (End of the Road), occasionally joyful and brash (Setting Forth) and always philosophical without being preachy (Hard Sun). Some here have complained that the songs are "too short" or that there is other music in the film that is not represented here. Since when did the length of a song determine its impact? Since when was there a law that says all music in a film must appear in a soundtrack CD? This CD is only the music Eddie created and played (all instruments - like back in the good old days with Stevie Wonder's Innervisions - which this CD somehow seems to vibe with pretty well), and as such it is a wonderfully cohesive whole.

"Guaranteed" perfectly captures the life of Chris McCandless... "Don't come closer or I'll have to go"... "Got my indignation but I'm pure in all my thoughts... I'm alive..." Eddie nailed it. Yes, I read the book years ago when it was published. I saw the movie, but I didn't expect to be so moved by the soundtrack. Not only does this music sound and feel great on the CD, it was perfectly woven through the movie. I'm no fan of Sean Penn, but his talent is unmistakable. Tapping Eddie for this music was a stroke of genius. As for no Oscar nominations... well, the Academy of Self Indulgent Paid Off Sold Out So Called Experts lost my respect decades ago.

Free Music Review: A 26 Minute Epic - Finally Vedder finds his Voice
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me keep this brief.

Yesterday, I loaded this album onto my Itunes and played one track after the other, never skipping or fast forwarding. It was the best 26 minutes I've spent on anything of late.

For the record, I have not seen this movie, and got this solely because I am a fan of Pearl Jam. However, this is as un-Pearl Jam as you're going to get, since Eddie went in for a more acoustic sound here. At its' worst (on two tracks) this reminded me of Chris Cornell's new CD (not entirely a bad thing). At its' best, it was reminiscent of some of Eddie's best work with other artists (such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan). His lower range and his whisper work to particular effect, bringing to mind my favorite male singer - Jeff Buckley.

Its the Jeff Buckley connection that is especially striking on this record. I have strong feeling Eddie listened to "Grace" and "Live at Sin E" before recording this as the similarities are too startling not to notice.

Finally a male solo album by a rock artist that is actually deserving of your money, respect and replay value. Yes, its short and clocks in less than a half hour, but this is better than all the other pointless 'rock' albums cluttering charts right now. Listen to this piece of art, and then wonder you even bothered buying that Nickelback album.

Five Stars for Eddie Vedder. Some things get better with age.

Free Music Review: Into the wild
Hit: 5 Stars

I am by no means a fan of Pearl Jam, never was and never will be but when I heard Eddie Vedder's work in the tragic tale of Christopher McCandless in the film INTO THE WILD, I just fell in love with the music. Eddie's solo work is a far cry from his work with Pearl Jam. The sparse acoustic melodies captured the essence of Christopher's journey across the US and his adventures in Alaska. The banjo is easily one of my least favorite instruments but the use of the instrument on this album is nothing short of greatness. My personal favorite song on the album is the haunting ballad "Nights Long" which sends chills down my spine whenever I listen to the song. For the first time ever, Eddie's vocals really moved me. There is an unspoken sadness to his voice that makes the song as well as the movie all the more poignant. My other personal favorite track is "Hard Sun" which features Corin Tucker from Sleater-Kinney. I can't imagine hearing this song without Corin's vocals. Her vocals and Eddie's are an odd combination but it works nevertheless. I find myself listening to INTO THE WILD over and over again. I keep thinking of the story of Christopher J. McCandless. Eddie Vedder did a fantastic job of capturing the essence of McCandless's story and translating it to music. My only problem with the cd is that it is very short but otherwise a wonderful soundtrack. I loved all of the songs.

Free Music Review: Into the Wild - Soundtrack as it should be
Hit: 5 Stars

A lot of the reviews underneath have covered much of what I want to say about this release. Apart from that there are some quality songs here that could easily have had a life outside of this context, its more important to praise the albums role. As the actors have roles, so does the music. It tells the story of the main character, from the perspective of the great songwriter in Eddie Vedder.

You can say what you want about Chris. Eddie opted to follow and write about the adventurous side of him. His desire to search for new meanings and his ability to stay unattached to material things. He was in many was a free spririt, something Mr. Vedder has drawn inspiration from. This inspiration feels real and that is the main reason why this album works so well.

The best songs on the album are No Ceiling and Guaranteed. No Ceiling works as a short but very effective song in the begnning of the album. I wish it was longer, but unfortuantly, it ends on 1:33 and leaves a strong desire for more. The last song, guaranteed is the crown of the album, both lyrically and musically. First time I read through the lyrics, I was feeling Chris more than I ever did while reading the book.

Great soundtrack, great songwriter and great movie. Full score!

Free Music Review: Acoustic Eddie makes it a classic album
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a fairly young Pearl Jam fan (I was 4 when they released their classic album "Ten"), I have had to do a lot of catching up with the many moods and styles of Pearl Jam. Initially, I strongly disliked some of their slower tracks (Garden, Oceans, Indifference, etc.), but having had some time to listen to them more closely, and having seen five concerts over some 8 years, I have seen how diverse, and truly special, PJ's music can be once Eddie takes center stage and just sits down with his guitar.

The soundtrack here for "Into the Wild" is a great example of Eddie letting go of all the corporate distractions that he and PJ have had to dodge for over 15 years as one of the more longstanding rock bands of our time. This album is a wonderful listen, especially if you are a fan of PJ's slower songs. Done in all acoustics, this albums creates a more intimate connection with the listener, as most of the songs are populated with simply Eddie, his guitar, and you.

Although it is a bit short, the songs are great to listen to many times in a row, and they have yet to tire me out, and I've listened to the album 10 times in the past 3 days. Pop it in, sit back, and relax to this great example of the older, more matured Eddie Vedder that so many Pearl Jam fans have to come to adore.
