Free Music Review: Amazing Talent!

I must confess that I have been an avid Edie Brickell (and New Bohemians) fan for at least 15 years now, so my review will be biased. Unlike some, I was not looking for something that sounded just like an older album/song. I think it's important for artists to evolve (although sometimes that does mean revolving for some) musically/lyrically while still maintaining the core that shines through all of their endeavors.
When I first heard about this album, I was suspended in ecstatic anticipation of the day I could purchase it. Upon checking the track listing, I noticed that a couple of songs -- "Rush Around" and "Came A Long Way" -- were on the last album I purchased by the New Bohemians, Live Montauk Sessions (if you have not bought this album, you can find it at the band's official site, and it is FABULOUS, albeit a bit raw...no, this band has not been "gone for more than a decade," as some have mentioned). I decided to check those two songs out first, and thought that they were milder renditions with some lyrical differences compared to the LMS album. After listening to Volcano in its entirety, I felt that the sound was rather lackluster (which I believe is a production glitch). However, I LOVED the music, vocals, and lyrics!
After owning the album for several months, I had the JOY of catching Edie Brickell perform many of these songs live. The sound during the live performance truly dwarfed that of the recording and just confirmed my conviction that there was a production issue with the CD. Additionally, Edie introduced several songs with stories, and my favorite involved the song "The Messenger." It was incredible, and it really added more meaning to the song! My perception of the story: Edie Brickell evidently lost her father a few years ago, and when she went home for the funeral, she had an ethereal experience involving a white bird -- The Messenger. During her visit home, she went to another room to get away from the crowd and have a few moments of private grieving. While lamenting the loss of her father, she saw a white bird that appeared to be looking at her, and then he disappeared from view. After a few moments of looking out the window for him, she saw that he was much closer to her than before, and she heard the bird say to her, "just because you cannot see doesn't mean that he isn't here" or something along these lines (the song lyrics are "just because you cannot see doesn't mean that it isn't there"). It was a bittersweet story, and the whole place basked in an emotional vibe during the song's performance!
Buy this album if you love lyrical simplicity that miraculously unleashes a multifaceted mental/emotional orgasm on life, or if you just want to listen to something that's pleasing to the ear/brain all the way through! Also, be on the lookout for more amazing talent from the New Bohemians!
