Free Music Review: The Best of Piaf in English

I played Piaf records over 30 years ago and then lost interest as I drifted to MoTown. I recently went to see the new movie about her life. It is INCREDIBLE and features an ASTOUNDING performance by the lead actress. I was moved to tears and and as the credits rolled, I stood, yelled "God Bless You Piaf"..and applauded. That act got the whole theater to do the same. I fell in love with her all over again only this time as a man and not a teen. I turned to amazon to fill the gaps in my collection and was please to see she had made a recording in english. On her first visit to America Piaf was NOT a success. Audience expected a Paris Showgirl and out comes Piaf in her little black dress with her cross standing 5 feet if that. She sang her songs in French and they had to be explained before she performed each one. This took a long time and was tiresome to the audience. Piaf went home and vowed to "never let that happen again". She learned English and the next time she came to America she "Blew them away!!!! He song La Vie en Rose became an instant classic. I received this CD just the other day and haven't stopped playing it. It is a side of Piaf I had never seen. She breaks my heart with each song and when she sings Chante moi...I can hardly breathe. She wrote the song and sings it with a passion seldom heard today. I thank God everyday that we had the ability to record Piaf and because of that..she will live forever. HYMN TO LOVE:ALL HER GREATEST SONGS IN ENGLISH by Edith Piaf is a wonderful cd for the English translations of some of her most famous songs.
Piaf is another one of those songbirds who have distinctive voices. In either French or English, she sounds like Piaf.
Her French accent makes these songs all the more alluring, and I love the English versions of "La Vie En Rose," "No Regrets" and "Autumn Leaves."
Of course the versions of these songs are not to replace her original French editions, just add a little complimentary color.
The cd comes with small cover/booklet including French and English liner notes with biography and song information and pictures of Piaf. The remastering is done well and the songs are nice, clear and loud.
Makes for great dinner music, so get your copy today!

Until I heard this CD, I was unaware that Edith Piaf had ever recorded any songs in English. I was aware, however that she didn't learn much English until very late in life. Someday, I hope to have heard everything she ever recorded. She died when I was 21, but I have enjoyed hearing her sing from the time I was about 12, maybe earlier. One does not need to understand the words in her songs to appreciate the power and feeling she puts into all her work; the meaning is clear enough.Free Music Review: Great Piaf!!!

Yes, the French versions are better but it's so refreshing to hear those songs in English especially VIE EN ROSE. At times I couldn't understand her with that thick accent but mostly it's comprehensible. And that voice could sing any language & still transcends the language barrier!! Highly recommended!!! having been introduced to edith in french and loving french chansons, this english version of songs is good, alas a bit 'foreign' for me. never the less, still ... it IS edith and having seen 'la vie en rose' several times, whenever I listen to this english version, I just think of the scenes in the movie, when she is in the states. still recommend it!
