Free Music Notes for Back RoomFree Music Review: 4.5 Stars.... Very impressive debut album Hit: 4 Stars
Editors stormed on the UK music scene in early 2005 with the single "Bullets", and haven't looked back since. The band's sound is reminiscent of Echo and the Bunnymen and Interpol (I played the CD to my 15 yr. old daughter and after 2 songs she said "hey, this sounds like Interpol", and she meant it as a compliment).
"The Back Room" (11 tracks, 43 min.) starts off with a 2'30 min. blazing "Lights", with lead singer Tom Smith proclaiming "I've Got A Million Things To Say", and boy, do they ever. Outstanding songs follow: "Munich" (the second single) is mesmerizing, "Blood" (third single) is almost danceable, in a dark kinda way. Other highlights include "All Sparks", the epic "Open Your Arms" and the closer "Distance", but there really isn't a weak track on the album. "Bullets" has just been re-released in the UK as a single, and you can just feel this band is going places.
Many have commented that this album is the UK's response to Interpol's "Turn on the Bright Lights", and I have to agree. This is a near-perfect album, drenched with urgency from beginning to end, just beautiful. It begs the question not if but when this album will find a US release and a US audience. "The Back Room" is easily one of the best albums of 2005. Highly recommended!
Free Music Review: Usually not my bag baby, but I like it Hit: 4 Stars
I first hered The Editors while on itunes music store, and there song Munich was the free download of the week... So I picked it up. The song hit me quick... I simply love whoever produces for this band, cause whoever does is a genious. The production methods are at that top teir where nearly anyone can enjoy it... Me myself I am more of a Hip Hop, and Rap fan, and I cop very few UK Bands stuff, but this is good... And I just thought I would reveiw it to say, that fans of almost an genre will enjoy this music, and that is when you know your good... I really dont like the vocal style. but that is mostly because im used to a more rapping style of delivery in a deeper more U.S. Street voice, but other than that I like it. I checked out there old albums and this one is much better...
Sure to me at least they are no MF Doom, GZA, or 2Pac lyrically, and as far as there producing, I think Premo, Dre, and Alchemist can beat them, but I am more of a Hip Hop guy... In short this is a great album, and the production on there single is simply amazing, and being a music lover, and a upcoming producer myself, I don't really know how anyone can hate this album, it is just solid.
Free Music Review: Editors do not have to equal Interpol Hit: 4 Stars
I'm sorry, but every time I read anything about the Editors, there is a comparison to Interpol. UGH. I've never liked Interpol, yet I LOVE this band. I've seen Intertpol live (opening for the Cure) and I was extremely underwhelmed. I've seen the Editors live and they were electric! The songs from the debut and a number of "b" sides were played with an almost manic energy and a number of the cuts, most notably "Open Your Arms," were faster and far more aggressive than the studio cuts.
Anyway, I would be much more likely to compare this band to older UK bands like Echo & The Bunnymen or Joy Division than Interpol...probably because I like those bands and I'm old enough to have seen them both live in their prime.
At the end of the day, this band should be compared to no one. I am sure this cd is only the beginning of something very impressive. They played a few new songs at the show the other night and those songs were actually better than most of the cuts on The Back Room. Especially the one throw away track, "Camera," which should have been a b-side....and the one reason I didn't give this one 5 stars.
Free Music Review: If you have a million things to say, then stop repeating yourself Hit: 4 Stars
The editors are a good band - really good, in fact. Great music, a great voice that's somewhere between Joy Division's Ian Curtis and Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry, and great catchy hooks. So why are they just really good, and not truly great? Because they take that catchy hook that sounds so good and they run it into the ground. They're hanging onto their punk roots, and holding themselves down. It's like a contest - how many times can he repeat the chorus before I give in and skip ahead to the next track? I got it the first 20 times you said it, Tom - write another verse, already! If they had more verses than chorus repetitions, or at least an equal number, that could catapult them to true greatness.
Free Music Review: British Band Imitating New York Band Imitating British Bands Hit: 4 Stars
The Editors and Interpol are the musical equivalent of Armageddon and Deep Impact. Except, unlike the movies, these bands don't suck. I'd say The Editors rock out a touch more than Interpol but the two bands really sound amazingly similar. I was slightly disappointed with Antics and this album definitely holds its own against Turn On The Bright Lights. They've got the goods and I hope the album gets released domestically because there's an audience for the Joy Division/4AD/whaterver you want to call it sound over here as well.
