Free Music Notes for Elaine Stritch - At Liberty (2002 Original Broadway Production)Free Music Review: It doesn't get any better than this. Hit: 5 Stars
This recording belongs with a very select group of concert albums such as "Bette Midler - Live at Last," "Follies in Concert" and (yes, I dare to invoke the name!) "Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall."I am so happy that this recording was made. Being stuck in Hooterville, I often miss out on the cultural events the rest of the country takes for granted [the PBS station in Tallahassee doesn't even broadcast "Evening at Pops" - we get Lawrence Welk reruns] I've been a fan since I first heard Stritch on the "Company" album. I've been following her career ever since - eagerly awaiting each television appearance - no matter if it be on Rosie O'Donnell's show or "Law & Order." I live for the annual Tony Award broadcast in hopes that she'll perform. This recording simply could not be improved upon. Her stories about William Inge and Edward Albee are priceless - and sound fresh (even though I know she rehearsed every detail with director George C. Wolfe - we do get "EGG the Arts Show"). The selection of tunes by Noel Coward, Lorenze Hart and Stephen Sondheim - especially "I'm Still Here" - prove that Stritch is a true original. One of the all-time great Broadway talents.

"It's not the work, it's the steps." PERFECT! Although my tickets to see Ms. Stritch are set for weeks from now, this is an absolutely infectious CD. I have to admit it -- move over, Bea Arthur. Although I saw Bea live and have the recording and thought Stritch couldn't top her, she has. This is a double CD set that is a MUST for any lover of the theater. Not only does Stritch give her distinct and impeccable (I say this truly) voice to the music, but her vignettes are funny, touching, and heart-breaking. Ms. Stritch is a "voice" that will never be forgotton. Hearing "Zip" and her Sondheim touchs make this a CD that will be a permanant favorite in my collection. A life life like "Strichy's" is unparalleled. Anyone who loves theater or who wants to enter the industry needs to listen to this CD long and hard! She's laughed, she's cried, she's got the t-shirt. I can only hope that when I visit the Neil Simon to see her live, I can see and hear what I've heard on this recording. Loves, laughs, liquor, and lucidity. Stritch is still here and is here to stay. This is not only a purchace, but an investment.
Free Music Review: The Best of the Best Hit: 5 Stars
This year for the Tony Awards 4 very amazing people were competing, including Barbara Cook and Bea Arthur. Yet out of the best came the best: Elaine Stritch. She has really seen it all and tells her life story to you with great songs that comes along with them. She tells you openly about her drinking problem and talks about Company, and sings her famous song "The Ladies Who Lunch," and also sings a song that I truly think is a great song, but is 100 times better when she sings it. She puts character in energy in to her songs. Ms. Stritch also talks about/tells you stories about Ethel Merman, Hal Prince, her experience in Pal Joey, where she had to go from a theatre in New York (where she was understanding Merman) and then go and sing her song "Zip" in New Haven Connecticut. She also talks about her first Broadway show and John Bay, the man she married. The CD is an amazing three hours of stories, songs, laughter, sadness, and most of all fun. Any person who lives with theatre needs this CD, it is not even an option.
Free Music Review: If you want to know what's great about the theatre... Hit: 5 Stars
....spend an evening there with Elaine Stritch in her one-woman show. It's truly amazing. I saw her in the front row in Los Angeles and a more brilliant night I cannot remember. She's got guts. She's got style. She's got class. And, really, there aren't many more of them like that.
One newspaper review said something along the lines of "Someday, the world will be divided into two groups -- those who saw 'Elaine Stritch at Liberty' and those who wish they had." I went in thinking, "Well, that's got to be an overstatement...and came out wanting to be sure I was on the list of those who had seen it and were so happy to have done so.
She's funny and tragic and has a tale about everyone and everything. If life is a journey, she's taken an amazing one. Buy the CD. Buy the DVD. And then be thankful they've invented the technology to preserve forever a great show and a great night at the theatre.
Free Music Review: Stunning Hit: 5 Stars
After seeing Stritch live in this show, I had to get the CD so friends who weren't lucky enough to have seen her would understand what I was raving about. This woman defines the term "living legend". The show - and the CD - can't be described fully. the song selection is terrific and the stories are both hilarious and sobering. Certain lines, such as what Ethel Merman said to Elaine when she needed to leave an understudy role for Merman to sing in another show - are classic catchphrases. It's a shame that such an honest, warts-and-all performer was treated so shabbily at the Tony Awards. This CD shows that the lady is a brilliant talent who still owns THE LADIES WHO LUNCH and I'M STILL HERE. (Even though,as Stritch says, she's still too young to sing the latter.) By all means, BUY this CD, whether you saw Stritch's show live or not.
