Free Music Notes for Elaine Stritch - At Liberty (2002 Original Broadway Production)Free Music Review: Irreplaceable Hit: 5 Stars
The way Ms. Stritch wrings emotion out of songs is priceless, stunning and at once everything one can ever hope to bear witness to in the performing arts. I have had the pleasure of hearing her sing live and this recording aptly captures the richness and nunance of her voice. She is emotionally resonant, stark, and genuine. She squeezes every bit of emotion out of "But Not For Me/If Love Were All" or "There Never Was a Baby (Like My Baby)" to the same degree she does in comical gems such as "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?" Unless a song calls for something otherwise, Ms. Stritch never imbues it with anything but the bravest quality - total emotional honesty and nakedness. To hear this woman sing is to catch one's breath and feel life, and "At Liberty" is by far (and by default) the best recorded proof.
Free Music Review: Open Letter to Ms Stritch Hit: 5 Stars
Dear Ms. Stritch, I love you! I've always liked you, but now I truly love you! Your show 'at liberty' is more funny, remarkable, insightful, and moving than any written biography ever could be. Your life is truly legendary. I may never get to see or meet you in person, but this CD makes me feel like I have been sitting with you at home talking until the early morning hours. I hope and pray that you get to use that "43 year old acceptance speech" this year. To the theater junkies(myself included): You may have rare CD's "Carrie" and the like(like I do), but I would give them all up to have this one. This is more than theater, this is history. Ms. Stritch, I love you. Kenny
Free Music Review: A BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE. Hit: 5 Stars
I just listened to this cd and I am still glowing from this brilliant and electrifying performance. Elaine Stritch is STILL a glorious and unique performer. The previous reviewer commented on her age and said that "she should retire". NONSENSE! No one can sell a song or instill the heart in a lyric as well as can Miss Stritch. As, for her relationship with Noel Coward, read the book of his personal reminisences, "The Noel Coward Diaries",in which he praises her in glowing terms as an actress and as a person. On her part, she has spoken fondly and respectfully about Noel in several interviews that I have read and seen over the years. BRAVA, MISS STRITCH! She is tops in my book!
Free Music Review: Sound is incredible. Hit: 5 Stars
A few weeks ago I caught a music special on cable TV where various rock and pop stars (many of whom I like) sang their favorite Broadway songs. The effort was gallant but the results were painfully mediocre. I kept saying "their voices are fine, but where's the personality?" Every single one of them would have benefited from hearing Elaine Stritch sing a single note. Her voice? Flawed beyond belief, but she knows exactly what she's doing and where she's going. Authenticity? Impeccable! The sound quality of this recording? I felt like I was sitting right in front of the stage. I don't know how that immediacy was captured and I've never heard it before. Tony awards all around!
Free Music Review: Another CD that is really THE SHOW Hit: 5 Stars
I am thrilled that after seeing Elaine Stritch in her "at Liberty" show, the CD actually keeps most of the dialoque. While her songs are well acted, her stories made the show for me. She bares her soul through these stories, and you get a sense of who she is. My only complaint about the CD is that they did not keep in ALL the dialoque. I so enjoyed the "Dreamgirls: the Concert" CD becasue it had not a note or word cut from the 3 hour show. Regardless of the few bits dropped off the "At Liberty" CD, it is still a great representation of the show, and the lady! I only hope that more cast recordings begin to inlcude dialoque...
