Free Music Notes for You Are My Little BirdFree Music Review: a new favorite! Hit: 5 Stars
I heard Elizabeth Mitchell, her husband, and their daughter being interviewed and singing songs from this album on an NPR podcast. I was instantly intrigued and logged onto Amazon and ordered a copy of the CD.
I was not disappointed! As soon as the CD came, I slipped it into the CD player in my one-year-old daughter's room and we started bopping around to the music right away. I love the Bob Marley cover and also "Pretty Little Baby" the best. My daughter starts dancing whenever I turn the CD on, and loves it when I sing along to her.
The songs are catchy, dreamy, and excellently put together, with harmonies and lilting melodies all mixed up together. My favorite part is the addition of Mitchell's little girl to the singing. I think this makes the CD all the more appealing for people with children.
So, now I've ordered several other CDs featuring Elizabeth Mitchell singing songs for children. I am certain that we will not be disappointed!
Free Music Review: Not your average children's music... Hit: 5 Stars
For one thing, Mitchell includes songs by Bob Marley, Lou Reed, Neil Young and Gillian Welch/David Rawlings. The inclusion of a Welch/Rawlings tune is a clue to the aesthetic as well. Parents who adore Welch's Time (the Revelator) will feel very much at home with this CD. The arrangements are spare in the best sense of that word. There is a simplicity, a purity and a strength that is refreshing for anyone annoyed to the point of sociopathy by other children's CDs. What I like about this CD is that it makes both my girls and I want to dance and sing along. I guess what I am getting at is that listening to Mitchell is like reading great children's literature and watching a great kids movie (e.g., My Neighbor Totoro). Mitchell's music speaks to the music lover in all of us. I would be perfectly confident giving this CD to someone who loved folk music whether or not they had kids. My only complaint about the CD is the lack of lyrics in the ample booklet.
Free Music Review: Please share this music with your children! Hit: 5 Stars
I randomly grabbed this CD in a bookstore after a long and desperate search for some kid-friendly music that didn't involve singing hamsters, Disney characters or--dare I say it--Raffi. I took it home and played it for my daughter (18 months) and we were both instantly hooked. It is the #1 CD played in our house and my little girl has even learned to pop it in the CD player herself! My husband, who has a severe allergy to anything cutesy-poo, has enjoyed it, too. It is such warm and sincere music, alternately toe-tapping and soothing. I appreciate songs like "Little Bird" that have complex rhythms and melodies. I laughed so hard when I finally realized that "3 Little Birds" is a cover of the Bob Marley classic. Awesome! I have given this as a gift to friends and hope you will do the same. We need to be sure Ms. Mitchell gets the recognition she deserves and hopefully makes more delightful, authentic music with her charming family.
Free Music Review: I have to sing along... Hit: 5 Stars
anytime I hear this woman sing! Elizabeth Mitchell has the perfect voice for singing folk songs, children's music, lullabies, and such. Her voice has a magical quality that draws me into singing along. I bought this for my kids, but find myself choosing to listen to her music even when I'm alone.
The versions of "What Goes On" (Velvet Underground), "Three Little Birds" (Bob Marley), Winter's Come and Gone (Gillian Welch) are incredibly well done, mixing modern music that translates well into children's music with classic standards like "Peace like a River" and "Little Liza Jane".
The insert booklet is a bonus for those wanting to learn a bit more history on children's music or about Mitchell.
Free Music Review: The best children's CD out there Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD a year ago and have enjoyed it more than any other children's CD I own. Elizabeth Mitchell has a beautifully simple voice and tonal quality that is extremely easy on the ears. My adult children, and their babies love to listen to her as she is upbeat but also relaxing. Her lyrics depict a love of and understanding of nature and it's creatures in a time when, so often, kids are inside on computers and needing, so badly, the connection to mother earth and her bounty. I bought all three other CD's and would, in a minute, purchase any other music she would record. My little grandchildren love "Little Bird" and in fact, sang it about their new "visitors" when I purchased bird feeders and a bird book for them.
