Free Music Notes for Ella and Louis Again
Free Music Review: EASY LISTENING

After years of listening to them via radio disk jockeys and on my own 78" records, I had a chance to see both Louis and Ella, live and in-person, as was said many years later, on the stage of the old Roxy theater, about 1945. The film showing, for which they led the stage show, was the recently released, The Purple Heart 1944, starring Dana Andrews and Richard Conte. The Roxy was the Twentieth Century Fox showcase theater for NYC, and this was its opening. For a teen-ager, who might get into that war, if it went on just a bit later, it reinforced the idea of just why we had to beat these guys. How it would look 66 years later, I have no idea. Probably appears like pure propaganda; at the time, though, many guys had died, more than in Korea, Viet Nam, Afghanistan, and Iraq combined.
At any rate, that was the context in which the very young Ella Fitzgerald (probably 20's and Louis Armstrong (early-40's) sang solo and duet before the big band which Louis was fronting at the time. This only a few years before I would see him in Town Hall, trying out the small band with which he would tour (with varying personnel) for the remainder of his life. Alone and together, they were the kind of magic, which can happen when two unique musical personalities were able to subordinate their distinctiveness into harmonious interaction rather than clashing competitiveness.
These, and the other records they made together over the years (she outlived him by many years),are a glowing representation of their melded talents. Neither is taking center stage with the core of the music with which Louis had already innovated for all of the Jazz that followed and with which Ella would innovate later with a newer version of what had followed his lead. Both simply swung free and easy, Ella with the voice that could sound like an instrument when she wanted it to, and Louis with the voice which was only another version of his trumpet. This is what easy listening really meant and not the dustbins for the "out of date" which marks most record stores (if I may still call them that) today.
