These recordings showcase Ella's incredibly pure voice backed up by some of the greatest musicians of the time. The songs with Duke Ellington's and Nelson Riddle's orchestras are superb. Two Ellington classics, "I Let a Song Go out of My Heart" and "Prelude to a Kiss" feature Ella backed up by a wonderful sextet; both are outstanding. But the best song of the bunch has got to be "Solitude", featuring Ella's vocals accompanied by Barney Kessel's guitar. A simple arrangement, but every time I listen to it I seem to pick up a little nuance I haven't heard before.
The liner notes are also great. In addition to listing the songwriters, arrangers and musicians, they list the LP of original issue, should the listener be tempted to dig deeper into Ella's recordings for Verve. Hard to believe, but this 57 minute CD is just a small sampling of what she did for the label.
