Pop Kulcher Review: This primarily acoustic retro-pop singer-songwriter has gotten major hype on the West Coast lately (much like Mary Lou Lord earlier this year) -- which, at least based on this record, is pretty well-deserved. A quietly engaging album, with great sound, nicely layered vocals and instrumental backing, and plenty of catchy but understated pop hooks. This may not be a ringing endorsement in some circles, but Smith reminds me (both vocally and musically) of some of the poppier, less sappy stuff that Simon & Garfunkel were doing some thirty years ago (but with some post-punk edginess along the lines of XTC or the Posies). Reminds me a bit of the debut album from the long-forgotten Dream Academy ("Life in a Northern Town"), but without the Eurosynth elements. A few songs leap right out and grab you ("Waltz #2 (XO)" and "Bled White" particularly), but even the duller ones are pleasant and enjoyable enough. Nice stuff and certainly an excellent buy at the discount prices I've seen.
