Free Music Review: "Elton John was born to be a musician"
Hit: 5 Stars

After "Empty Sky"'s release in Britain everyone knew Elton JOhn had potential. At the release of his first single the papers and magazines raved him to be the greatest musician at that time. But after only sell 4,000 copies of "Empty Sky" Elton decided that it was time for him to really make a name for himself. He did this by releasing this album.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of each of the classic songs found on this legendary album. The album was not only released in England but also in the United States. The American got to know Elton because of this album. First, let me tell you my knowledge of this album.

The album began in 1970, shortly after the release of "Empty Sky". Elton went to the producer who helped produce "Empty Sky" asking if he would produce "Elton JOhn". The producer pretty much laughed Elton JOhn out of the studio. Yeah, like he was going to produce another album from this guy. The first time he fell for it, the album only sold 4,000 copies!

So Elton goes off to find someone else willing to produce this album. He takes it to another guy who knows Elton's record selling history, but he is much more compassionate for Elton and listens to the album. He is amazed and pretty much declares that "this is a hit."

After the album's release, fans were bewildered. They loved the album and it did very well here in the US, much better then it did in Britain. The greatest hit on the album is "Your Song", and it remains probably the most loved hit of Elton JOhn's thirty-seven year career. It seems that Elton plays your song on every tour.

In 1970, you could hear "Elton JOhn" being played by old record machines in homes across the country. Infact there is a story of the record company that produced it playing the album over and over while the employees' jaws dropped because they were amazed by this album.

As for Elton, he did not like his vocals on this album. He says that he sounds like a "young schoolboy with his balls cut off." Well, yes, this isn't the mature voice that we here on today's Elton JOhn music, but it is an excellent portrayal of the extent of Elton's voice at this stage and time. The vocals to Elton's albums get better and better every album. The vocals on this album are much, much better then the catastrophic vocals of "Empty Sky".

"YOur Song"-Ah, Elton's number one and first hit. "Your Song" is a beatiful love song that is kind of odd if you listen to it closely. Its as if the song is about the writer of a song writing a song. You can always picture Elton JOhn sitting on a roof kicking off large patches of moss from the shingles with a notebook and pen writing this song. It nearly cry when it is played because it is so beautiful.

"The Cage"-"The Cage" is a classic song by Elton. It is a rocky song with a very catchy tune.

"Take Me to the Pilot"-This is also one of Elton John's greatest hits. It is an up tempo, rocky song that depicts a man trying to get control of a woman.

"No Shoe Strings on Louise"-This is kind of a country-type song, but it isn't twangy like country. It's probably my least favorite song on this album. That isn't because it sucks, its just because its not as strong as some of the other songs on this album.

"First Episode at Hienton"-This is definetly my favorite song on this album. It isn't really considered a hit, but if you really listen to the vocals on this album it's amazing for a twenty year old performer. The song is a love song, one that you would want to dance to with your girl especially if her name's Valerie.

"Sixty Years On"-this is one of my favorite Elton John songs because it is well performed and it has this mysterious lure about it. The lyrics are highly intelligent as is the melody. You can almost picture Elton as an old man being walked by someone to church.

"Border Song"- This is Elton's first Rhythym and Blue performance. It is compared to the work of Aretha Franklin, but it has a message that we should all take heed to. We should love one another.

"The Greatest Discovery"- This song has a beautiful melody, and the lyrics are very interesting. It depicts Bernie soon finding out that he has a new baby brother.

"I Need you to Turn To"-Like, "Sixty Years On", "I Need you to Turn To" is a work depicting Elton as an older man. He needs someone to turn to when times are rough as the title indicates.

"The King Must Die"-definetly the best written song the album. It also has a catchy toon. After the album is over you can still here it ringing through you ears..."LONG LIVE THE KING"

Long live Elton and it's albums like this that keep him alive.
