Free Music Notes for Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002Free Music Review: Pretty good if you don't mind . . . Hit: 4 StarsGREATEST HITS 1970-2002 lacks three essential Elton John singles: the number one smash "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," the top ten hit "Mama Can't Buy You Love," and the Princess Diana tribute and another number one record, "Candle In The Wind '97."
Two other big songs do not appear on this collection, albeit duets: "That's What Friends Are For" with Dionne Warwick and others, and "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" with George Michael.
If you don't mind missing any of those songs, GREATEST HITS 1970-2002 comprises the rest of Elton John's biggest hits.
Free Music Review: A GENUINE Greatest Hits Compilation Hit: 5 StarsThe song list speaks for itself on this double CD set. I won't get into the debate of concept albums versus complilations, other than to say that a CD set like this is perfect for filling up that iPod or other listening device with certified hits that easily withstand the assault of the "random" play function.
True fans of Sir Elton probably have all of these hits in one media or another, but this collection puts them together admirably.
Free Music Review: A wonderful collection of music Hit: 5 StarsBefore purchasing this album, I had had Elton John in the back of my mind for a few years as an artist with several songs that I liked. The number of songs by Elton that I liked grew (to include "Mona Lisas," "I Guess That's Why...," "Sad Songs," "Your Song," and others), and I decided that a greatest hits CD would be the best place to start.
Somewhat suprisingly, upon first listening to disc 1, I found that I enjoyed every song, even ones I had never heard before. Disc 2 begins with 6 amazing songs, including "I'm Still Standing" and "Little Jeannie." As the second disc continues, one can notice a change in the style of music. There are more ballad-y songs, and they sound more alike. The collection closes with 2 wonderful songs from Elton's latest album (at the time this was released), "I Want Love" and "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore." The booklet included in the package is HUGE and contains a biograpy, pictures, and discography of Elton's career.
Some of my new favorites are:
Levon
Honky Cat
Daniel
Someone Saved My Life Tonight
Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word
Little Jeannie
I'm Still Standing
I Don't Wanna Go on with You Like That
This Train Don't Stop There Anymore
I love that I can listen to both CD's without skipping any songs (most of the time), but more than that I love that this album was a wonderful introduction to Elton John's music. I have since bought several other Elton albums and enjoyed them as well.
As a note, I would like to mention that as other reviewers have complained, there are many notable ommissions of Elton's greatest songs from these "greatest hits." However, I assume the purpose of releasing this collection was to sell more albums, and gain publicity, not to encompass all of his best work (is that even possible?). With that in mind, I think this release perfectly does just that.
>>>This is a perfect place to start an Elton John collection (I assure you, you will buy more from him after this).

Free Music Review: Elton John Your Song and Doheny Boulevard Hit: 5 StarsMore than thirty years ago I was walking down Doheny Boulevard in LA, made a try for Sunset and ended up walking into the Troubador where they were featuring a virtually unknown UK singer pianist named Elton John. He was surprisingly taut and sculptured then and he had the round rimmed rawhide colored glasses on. Man when I heard him sing Your Song, one of his signature tunes since then and on this cd, I couldn't get over the unique and positively brilliant aspect of his compositions. I had no knowledge at the time of his writing partnership with Bernie Taupin and ofcourse no possible ability to forecast Elton's sheer dominance of the music business nor his eventual outrageousness on stage, fights and controversies and uncomprable density of near perfect work. I just know now what I could not have known back on that LA walk I had in a warm pulsating and euphoric drizzle-rain-Sir Elton is and was always either the best or near there when it comes to emotionally stirring music and enviable musicianship. On this cd, Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002 there are two other memorable selections that I have always found to be touching and introspective, Tiny Dancer and Levon. Taupin's lyrics are very UK and Elton's piano and vocals just make these two entries the types
of songs that you never get tired of because they bring out the nostalgia and warmth that all comes within you when you listen to special music. I purchased this cd because at its price point it represented a great value, it never hurts to get the best for less when it comes to buying any media. Don't forget I am one of those cd reviewers who seems to remember the entire career spans of all the artists still touring because at my age, I was there when they started. Based on my appreciable longevity in critiquing music, this cd is one that you must get at the risk of compromising in quality any personal music collection where, for some, reason it is missing.
