Free Music Review: Simply Amazing
Hit: 5 Stars

What can I say about this album? It is absolutely awesome, and surprising coming out on the heels of four albums in less than 2 years; there was an exceptional risk of overkill, and that is probably why this album is so underrated. However, Elton John fans seems to be oblivious to what they're missing on this 9-tracked masterpiece, where every song has an awesome aspect to it. First off, it kicks off with "Tiny Dancer", which is a beautiful song with delicate lyrics and vocals. The next song is the album's biggest hit, "Levon". The song is great as far as singing and piano goes, but I think the true genius lies in Taupin's lyrics. And, as far as the remastered sleeve note says, I think this song is about Levon Helms, member of The Band. Anyway, it is great with storytelling, and Elton puts the words to music so well. The next song is "Razor Face", which has a very catchy piano number and Elton's singing is awesome on it, and the lyrics are great. The next song is the title track which is haunting and Elton does an awesome job on it. The next track is "Indian Summer", a 6 minute some odd seconds piece of art dealing with the removal of Native Americans. The lyrics and the vocals are very dramatic to the point where you can feel what they were feeling; this song is an awesome display and a song of outcry against the Indian removal... I must give props to the Elton/Bernie team on that one. Let's see, then comes "Holiday Inn", which is a nice and soothing tune, but really not a highlight on the album. Then comes "Rotten Peaches", probably my least favorite song on here, though it is pretty good... it has a memorable Elton "na-na-na"ing at the end. Oh, yes, then comes one of my favorites on this album "All the Nasties". The song's gospel flavor is much better than in "Border Song", and the "Turned a full blooded city boy into a full blooded city man" line that basically becomes the song's chorus is inspiring as well. The piano is awesome, and the gospel flavor of it is ALWAYS appreciated... nice to always get some black choir singers in on his song, and it ALWAYS works ("Border Song", "All the Nasties", "Bite Your Lip", etc). The album is then concluded by the haunting "Goodbye"... I wonder WHY they had to write that song... it's a great song, but it's too much of a tear-jerker. You can tell Elton wants people to just start breaking down at that point.

But, the album as a whole is something special. It has a rather dark atmosphere to it, and I only really listen to it when it is raining outside, to give you an idea. The rain seems to accentuate it much better. Anyway, I think this album is an awesome end to his pre-seven-consecutive-US-chart-topper Utopia. All Elton fans must buy! This is actually the first studio album by him that I bought myself. I gotta admit, I never enjoyed the entire thing the way I do now... it took me a while, but it is worth the honest listens.

Madman Across the Water Poster

Japanese-only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) paper sleeve pressing of this classic album from the British singer/songwriter and entertainer, originally released in 1971. SHM-CDs can be played on any audio player and delivers unbelievably high-quality sound. You won't believe it's the same CD! Universal. 2008.
Named for a cut that originally appeared on his Tumbleweed Connection album, Madman Across the Water yielded some of Elton John's earliest AOR staples. "Tiny Dancer," like the previous "Your Song," was introduced and carried by John's masterful piano composition. The song's sense of longing also employed the falsetto chorus that would become as much of a trademark as his costumes. "Levon," another entry into the John/Taupin "ballad of" category, is one of their finest pieces. The orchestration gives the song not only its sense of foreboding, but also its release of tension as the song ends. "Rotten Peaches" became a favorite, as did "Holiday Inn." There's also a different interpretation of the title track than appeared on Tumbleweed Connection. --Steve Gdula
