Free Music Notes for Rocket Man: Number Ones [CD/DVD Package]Free Music Review: There are so many favorites that are missing Hit: 3 Stars
The Good
All twelve of Elton John's U.S. #1's are here. Some are obvious, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Bennie & The Jets," "Daniel," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me "and" Can You Feel the Love Tonight." Others may puzzle you; "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Island Girl," and "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word." In addition John's top singles (and to fill out the album a little more), he's included five more favorites; "Your Song," "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "Candle in the Wind," and "Saturday Night's Alright." There is apparently a bonus DVD (which I didn't get) with five live performances from Elton's "The Red Piano" concert, plus five music videos.
The Bad
It's a little sad when you realize that after all those years in the music business, Elton has only had 12 number one songs in the U.S. Compared to the others who have released "Number Ones" albums, it's not many songs at all. I'm still scratching my head that "Candle in the Wind" wasn't a number one song. Also, Elton John has released numerous greatest hits packaged over the years. I really don't see the need to isolate the number ones.
The Verdict
This is a decent sampling from the pop-rock icon, but there are so many favorites that are missing. Some of Elton's best work never reached number one in the U.S. For the most Elton John for your buck, Elton John's Greatest Hits 1970-2002 would be a much better investment. Number Ones is merely a quick cash-in, with minimal packaging, and absolute minimal information in its booklet.
Free Music Review: Australian version may be better Hit: 3 Stars
Yet another Elton John Greatest Hits release. Let's face it, Elton has too many hits to fill a single CD. What's sad is, some of the lesser known but equally good singles never get included in any of his compilations. I am thinking of tracks such as "Empty Garden", "Mama Can't buy you love" and the brilliant "Chloe".
Now back to this new release to mark Elton's 60th birthday:
A search of different websites around the world shows different track listings. I think the UK listing is close to Australia's but UK contains some tracks which were minor hits. Fortunately Australia has removed those and added key tracks like "Blue Eyes" and "Don't go breaking my heart". The US edition isn't bad either but I'll put my money on the Australian version, see below:
Australian tracklisting:
1. Bennie And The Jets
2. Philadelphia Freedom
3. Daniel Gus Dudgeon
4. Rocket Man
5. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues
6. Tiny Dancer Gus Dudgeon
7. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
8. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
9. Candle In The Wind
10. Crocodile Rock
11. I'm Still Standing
12. Saturday Night's Alright
13. Your Song
14. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
15. Sacrifice
16. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
17. Tinderbox
18. Blue Eyes
Free Music Review: Another "Best Of" Album! Hit: 3 Stars
I think this has been done before, there was a best of set released after "Songs From The West Coast" came out. Now we got another one, with a DVD as a additional item to get buyers to buy this set. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Big Elton fan but "another" "Best Of" collection. If your really serious on getting this album, take the DVD performances & burn them to CD/mp3. those really are the only tracks worth buying this collection for in which all these other songs have been re-released many times before ;-) Search "Judemac Forever" on msn.
Free Music Review: What's the Point? Hit: 1 Stars
I am starting to feel a little used with these aging musical stars like Tony Bennett and Elton John searching for any reason to release their umpteenth best of CDs. Happy Birthday Elton, thanks for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road version 25. The videos are nothing to get excited about either.
PS: I am an EJ fan, but don't need to buy the same songs every year or so.
