This is a sad, emotional and deeply meaningful album, and the sadness is told through songs which were not written by Elvis, which adds to the mystical integrity of this remarkable session. The choice of songs like 'Too Far Gone, 'I'm Your Toy', and 'Tonight The Bottle Me Down', all encompass the forlorn tearfullness of lost love, drink, and of course, the country blues. The steel pedal work of John McFee is poignantley bone chilling, Steve Nieve places his keyboards at the very heart of the country mix, the attractions sit perfectly still, Billy Sherrill suggests, arranges and produces, and Elvis sings with dark shades which discretely hide back little tears.
