Free Music Review: A jewel among classics

It's funny when I think that my introduction to Elvis Costello was the book "1001 albums you must listen before you die", and even though I don't praise this book too much, the fact that Costello had as much albums listed as The Beatles caught my attention.
By taking a first look to the cover - a nerdy looking guy with a strange way of standing and a overexcited face - I had to get a hold of this album. Yes, My Aim Is True was my first and foremost Costello album, but it took a while for the album to grow on me. His strong accent and somewhat usual themes (songs about girls etc) stood in the way of my appreciation. The vocabulary of the lyrics was astonishing at first sight though.
The good thing about this record that kept me listening to it was it's accesible music; the songs have the perfect timing, a great melody and a strong overdose of supressed adrenaline. After listening to it so many times I had to listen to his other records, just what an amazing album makes you do.
I wouldn't call My Aim Is True a punk album - it's angry of course, but not as rebel and disorganized as usual punk music. Instead, the music is a melodic, intelectual tackle to rock n' roll, country and new wave (the latter because of the heavy use of synth organ). Lyrically, the songs unravel in the most phenomenal way; it's as if at moments of anger and confusion you grab a dictionary and start making some sense to your thoughts - without loosing the edge of the initial feeling.
The thing about this record (and most Costello albums) is that it's definitely male oriented. Every song spills out in one way or another tales of situational heartaches, emotional ravage due to a girl, and other assorted, daily frustrating social scenarios for juvenile minds. At an initial listen, I'm sure the first three songs will catch the attention of any listener ("Miracle Man" being a personal favourite of mine), as well as "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes". Eventually, every song grew in me.
The aspect of this album that I wouldn't discuss is it's impact on mainstream music; specially since Costello is too crafty and clever to be caught up in breaking barriers within genres. Besides, Initially the album wasn't a big commercial hit, even when it's regarded as a critical masterpiece.
At the end, this album - and others following - stablished Elvis Costello's style. He wouldn't come to lose this edge on his songs for a long period on his career, that's why I strongly recommend going for the works that followed this record; "This Year's Model" and "Get Happy!" being the most essential in my opinion.

That opening phrase--"Now that your picture's in the paper..."--was more than sneakily, if not intentionally, appropriate, since Costello was quickly declared the second coming. It's become de rigueur to dis the pub-rock backing of U.S. band Clover, but their work here is satisfactorily edgy; guitarist John McFee makes some of the arrangements with his wailingly articulate fills.
