Free Music Notes for Elv1s 30 #1 HitsFree Music Review: ARTIST OF THE CENTURY AND THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL Hit: 5 Stars
TV GUIDE named Elvis Presley the Entertainer of the Century. In the 1950s, journalists and critics hailed Elvis as the King of Rock 'n' Roll. This album of 31 US and UK no.1s proves why these titles are well-deserved. Elvis was a singles artist, an album artist, and made 33 movies in a film career that spanned 1956-1972.Elvis made many movie classics such as JAILHOUSE ROCK, KING CREOLE, BLUE HAWAII, LOVING YOU, and LOVE ME TENDER. Many of the no.1 singles on this release come off of movie soundtracks.BMG/RCA note that the singles have been "mixed and mastered from the original master tapes". The sound quality is excellent. Elvis Presley never sounded better. BMG/RCA used the methodology of the Beatles 1 album to obtain 31 no.1 singles on the US and UK charts. The 31st no.1 is a "bonus track", A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION, which went no.1 in the UK this summer, breaking the tie Elvis had with the Beatles for most no.1s at 17. This JXL remixed bonus track went no.1 in over 24 countries around the world and is in the new Eddie Murphy movie I SPY.The unmixed song was in the OCEAN'S 11 movie. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Elvis that he can still go no.1 around the world 25 years after his death. The single was also no.1 on the Billboard Sales Chart. It is a great bonus track. The 30 no.1s during Elvis' career are the music that defined a generation and created a musical, social, and political revolution. Elvis changed not only music, but styles of clothing, the way we wore our hair, the way he looked at the world around us. Elvis changed the world. And this music shows why. HEARTBREAK HOTEL is a classic record that began Elvis' streak on the pop charts. It is a song about loneliness and failed relationships, themes that are very contemporary today but not addressed in pop songs at that time.DON'T BE CRUEL was no.1 on the R&B, Pop, and C&W charts simultaneously. Elvis combined elements of black and white music which incorporated country, western, bluegrass, blues, tin pan alley, show tunes, to create what we now know as ROCK 'N' ROLL. In a period of McCarthyite witch-hunt conformity and racial segregation and the bland pop of Pat Boone, Elvis exploded on an unssuspecting America. We still feel the aftershocks today! Elvis created a revolution! John Lennon said: "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Bruce Springsteen stated that "Elvis is my religion. Without him I would be selling encyclopedias today." Elvis had the greatest musical and social influence and impact of the 20th century. He changed the way we think, act,and the way we perceive each other. He represented freedom and plurality. He came from the people and he spoke for the people. He was of the masses and for the masses. The selections on this set include LOVE ME TENDER, the 1956 classic ballad in pristine sound quality. You can hear every breath Elvis takes. The sound quality is that good! ALL SHOOK UP, TEDDY BEAR, JAILHOUSE ROCK, HARD HEADED WOMAN, HOUND DOG, CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE, A BIG HUNK O' LOVE, sound spectacular in this remastered sound! Elvis' vocals are clear and up front and the guitars can be heard much more distinctly. SUSPICIOUS MINDS sounds different because Elvis' vocals are more up front. BURNING LOVE, a great comeback no.1 from 1972, proves Elvis was the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Only Elvis could dominate any era by the power of his music. That is why he was termed the King of Rock 'n' Roll. No one else could match Elvis' career accomplishments or musical influence or impact. No one else even compares to Elvis. He is in a class all by himself.Little Richard and chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis and James Brown couldn't even buy a no.1 record. They don't know what a no.1 record even is. They have been hyped and overrated by mindless so-called music critics based on racism and on greed. But the people have spoken. In a democracy, it is the people who decide. We the people, Jack. The people decide, not some fascist-racist music critics. The people decide. E pluribus unum, Jack. The only criticism of this package is that the picture sleeves for the 45s were not included. Moreover, there are two alternate takes, of A FOOL SUCH AS I and THE WONDER OF YOU. This is inexplicable. But there are excellent photographs and a photo of Elvis' classic customized Gibson Jumbo 200 guitar. Peter Guralnick and Ernst Jorgenson wrote the liner notes. The sound quality is excellent. This is the music that changed America and that changed the world! This is not just any music but the soundtrack of Rock 'n' Roll. This is Americana. This is American music. I would highly recommend this collection. Hear why Elvis was dubbed the King of Rock 'n' Roll and the Entertainer of the Century. Elvis could do it all. And he did it all. Before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything. Buy this collection. Listen to the sound of the revolution! Elvis changed the world.
Elv1s 30 #1 Hits PosterSlide-pack edition of this release, a no-frills CD packaging featuring an outer slipcase with the original cover artwork and an inner 'slider' including a CD. There is no CD booklet in this package. For those wanting to delve into the magic that is Elvis should start here. 30 of his #1 singles including 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Don't Be Cruel', 'Suspicious Minds', 'Love Me Tender' and more, plus the remix of 'A Little Less Conversation' by Junkie XL.. Sony/BMG. 2007. In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship
