Free Music Notes for Elv1s 30 #1 HitsFree Music Review: "Elvis #1" Then, Now, and Forever Hit: 5 Stars
This is such an amazing collection. I was surprised when I found out it was coming out as a single disc. New Elvis fans should start right here! Those who have heard it all before should definitely buy this disc. The fifties tracks sound brilliant. The sixties and seventies tracks have been remixed and sound AWESOME. I've never heard all the nuances in Elvis' singing in "She's Not You" until now. "In The Ghetto" sounds like you're hearing it for the first time. "Burning Love" rocks like you've always wanted it to. Even the 1977 #1 "Way Down" is heard in a much brighter light with the new remix. I could go on and on. Do yourself a favor and buy this album now. If you are new to this music your life will never be the same. If you have been listening to Elvis for years, kick back and let an old friend take you to the heights of vocal ecstasy. I have all the previous reissues of this music as well as all the original records. Believe me, this one is well worth it.Now let's go over a few things from a curiosity standpoint. I don't understand why we have alternate takes of "A Fool Such As I" and "The Wonder Of You". I believe this must have been a mistake since there is no mention of such in the liner notes. Also if you listen closely to the end of "Hound Dog" there is an audio click. This is not in the master tape. Was this a defect in the mastering process that nobody noticed? If these things are to be corrected on future pressings than this pressing will definitely become more valuable. Finally where is "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You"? This great record was proudly included on RCA's 1987 release "The Number One Hits". Also on RCA's "The Top Ten Hits" it is listed as having reached number one. Were they wrong then or are they wrong now? Who knows. I suppose that historians can debate for years to come what songs actually made it to number one as there were several different charts used at the time. The bottom line is that Elvis Presley the artist was #1 then, is #1 now (sorry, Kelly Clarkson) and will forever be #1. The legend continues to grow.
Free Music Review: Elvis' biggest and best have never ever sounded better!!! Hit: 5 Stars
How time flies by! My current 2 CD compilation of Elvis Presley's biggest hits was issued way back in 1988. And to put it mildly the sound quality on that collection leaves much to be desired. Recently, I borrowed RCA's 2002 release "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" from my local library and gave it a listen. The difference in the sound quality was astounding! It goes without saying that the technology has come a long way in the past 16 years.
In my view, "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" has got to be the finest collection ever assembled of the much beloved "King of Rock & Roll". All 30 tunes included on this single disc collection were #1 songs either here in the USA or in England where Elvis' remains incredibly popular even to this day. And there is such a wide variety of styles included here covering every phase of Elvis Presley's remarkable career at RCA records. You are sure to enjoy old favorites like "Don't Be Cruel", "One Night" and "It's Now Or Never" all digitally remastered and crystal clear. Amazing! Younger fans might recall hits from the early 1970's like "Suspicious Minds" and the hard driving "Burning Love" from the Fall of 1972. I was also pleased to find a couple of tunes I do not currently own including "Wooden Heart" and "Way Down" both of which made it to the top of the charts in England. And as an added bonus, RCA has included the 2002 worldwide smash "A Little Less Conversation". This remix of the original recording helped introduce Elvis to a whole new generation of fans. Listen to it a few times and you will find that this tune will grow on you too.
If you are at all like me you like to see some decent liner notes when you purchasing a collection like this. RCA has included a nicely done 24 page booklet with this set. And best of all the price is extremely attractive. While I am not ordinarily in the habit of replacing CD's in my collection I am going to make an exception in this case. As soon as I stop typing, I am going to order "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" and toss out my old collection from 1988. It is that much of an upgrade. Very highly recommended!!!
Free Music Review: All Good Music But Some Were Never "#1" Hit: 5 Stars
Why do the music packagers have to say that? Trust me, if you don't already know, a number of these tunes were never #1. Some never APPROACHED #1. The fact that they are all good tunes by the King is this package's saving grace. Joe Dowell had a bigger hit of "Wooden Heart" in 1961 than Elvis' album cut from the "G.I. Blues" soundtrack, a variation of a German tune in old German, "Muss i Den". 1962's "She's Not You" never hit #1 though I loved the song. "Hard Headed Woman" is an example of early Elvis; I contest the claim it was #1. Along the way Elvis would do cover songs of others' hits like Hank Snow's ("Now and Then) There's A Fool Such as I" and Ray Peterson's "The Wonder of You"; #1s? the former, maybe, the latter, probably not. "One Night" that became a virtual Elvis signature song after his 1968 "comeback" special might have been #1 then or when it first came out, but the original 1955 Smiley Lewis version (one night of sin is what I'm now paying for) had better lyrics. During his generic period, Elvis also had a cover of the Orioles' "Crying in the Chapel"; it got up there but #1? Not sure. 1959's "Big Hunk of Love" (backed with the exceptional "My Wish Came True",not on this package) may have been #1. "Are you Lonesome Tonight?" that dated back originally to 1926 and which was recorded as a favor to the illegal immigrant, "Colonel" Tom Parker, was likely (an unexpected) #1. Am I picky? Yes. The packagers come off like country music compilers calling a 1970s country hit "#1" when it was actually #82 on the more meaningful pop music survey where the money is. (This, before country music became what it is today). It is unnecessary when you have this many great tunes that did rise to places high on the charts to label them falsely. They don't need such unnecessary hype; must have been the bogus colonel's idea. That would be just like the man who plundered Elvis' assets and held him back, not raised him to the highest level. Enjoy this music, #1 or not. It's worth it despite the misrepresentation.
Free Music Review: Great but a bit confusing Hit: 5 Stars
The 30 #1 singles on this CD were #1 in either the U.S. the U.K or both.
I understand, as the liner notes explain, that they stuck strictly to the "Pop" chart #1 singles and didn't attempt to included songs that hit #1 on the U.S. Country charts and/or R&B charts as it would exceed a single disc format.
Nevertheless, there is one very big #1 Elvis "Pop" single in the U.S. that is not on this set but is saved for the follow up CD "2nd to None".
The song is "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You"
It is on the the "Number Ones" CD from 1987.
On the "Top Ten Hits" cd from 1987 it shows the songs highest chart peak as # 1 with the month and year.
I understand that they may have had to sacrafice at least one #1 single for this 30 song set, but seeing as how "Wooden Heart" which was #1 in the U.K. but not even a hit of any kind in the U.S., is on this set, it seems that "Wooden Heart" could have been left off and saved for 2nd to None instead of "I want you, I need you, I love you" which was #1 in the U.S. and and # 14 in the U.K.
Then when you consider that "Burning Love" was not #1 in the U.K. and actually a #2 song in the U.S. according to Billboard but makes this set because it hit # 1 in the U.S. on the Cash Box chart, then it is even more unfair as "I want you , I need you, I love you", actually hit # 1 on Billborad.
I understand that "Burning Love" adds more weight to the 70's songs on the set and I'm not assuming that Billboard is better than Cash Box but every other #1 U.S. song on this set was #1 on Billboard and RCA does not include "Burning Love" on the "Number Ones" cd form '87 and on "The Top Ten Hits" CD from '87 they list it as #2.
Still a great collection, but the fact remains that of Elvis Presley's five #1 songs in the U.S. in 1956, one of them is not on this collection.
Free Music Review: Long live the King! Hit: 5 Stars
This record is brilliant for Elvis fans old and young, for the reason that it reminds us all just why he is called the King, and dispels any lingering rumours about him. For one thing, the great tracks show us that, contrary to the opinions of some, Elvis STOLE music from no-one. He was a pioneer, the creator of rock n roll. Despite the claims that he stole black music, pratically every black artist since has imitated, or been inspired by Elvis in some way (ever see Jacko dance on his toes, back in the days when he still looked human)? And secondly, him not having written all of his songs is irrelevant; he is not a songwriter, but a singer, and one of the best. This year's remix of 'A Little Less Conversation' by JXL brought Elvis to a whole new generation, and it is known that it wasn't just old fans who bought this collection. As his manager says on the sleeve, some of the songs are so associated with memories of Elvis that their actual quality as songs are forgotten - but a couple of listens to this fixes that; Elvis has never sounded better. Heartbreak Hotel sounds stirring and moving; Hound Dog and Hard Headed Woman are classic rock n roll; Love Me Tender and Don't show that Elvis didn't always need music to make a song. Other highlights include the beautiful gospel song Crying In the Chapel, the laid-back One Night, the rocking Burning Love, and its reprise Way Down, and the lovely Can't Help Falling In Love. There is also the epitome of 60's comeback Elvis, Suspicious Minds (Gareth Gates, eat your heart out.) Of course, this was made not just to commemorate the King, but to sell, and the novelty track Wooden Heart is there as proof. But apart from that, these songs really are excellent and put many of today's 'singers' to shame. And as the cd case itself proclaims, before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything.
