Free Music Notes for Elv1s 30 #1 HitsFree Music Review: Elvis not the King? Hit: 5 Stars
Elvis Presley not the King? Despite some of the misguided and nonsensical ramblings of the first "review" of this CD ..., Elvis fans, and non-fans as well, can (and will) be pleased with this brand new REMASTERED CD. ...It is the MUSIC that matters, and this CD goes a long way in showing everyone why. While Little Richard, Chuck Berry and dozens of others were instrumental in the explosion of Rock and Roll, it was Elvis Presley that was the spark that ignited it...No one should doubt that Elvis' recording of "Hound Dog" b/w "Don't Be Cruel" is not only the best selling single of the "Rock Era", it is also the epitome of everything that The Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys and countless others have aspired to ever since. The bottom line is this: The CD has been remastered from the master tapes from RCA. Never before has the music of Elvis Presley sounded more rich and alive. Never before has the magic he had been more evident. In 1956, Elvis Presley was responsible for selling close to half of all records sold in America. Not even the Beatles can claim that kind of success. Listening to Elvis' growth from "Heartbreak Hotel" to "Way Down" is staggering. Presley wasn't just satisfied with "Rock" - who else in "Popular Music" could sing a gospel song and have it go to #1? The answer is clear. Before anyone did anything - Elvis did everything. Hype? I don't think so . . . and I don't think you'd get an argument from any of the other founding fathers of Rock. There is only one King - this disc shows why. It's all about the music. Just listen - and you'll know too.
Free Music Review: It's only the beginning Hit: 5 Stars
25 years after his death and he is still Number 1 around the world. He recently had a Top 10 hit with America The Beautiful, ELVIS The Concert has been playing to sold out houses around the world since 1997, and now here is this phenomenal compilation of beloved tunes dominating the music scene. Hey, 1,000,000,000 People Can't Be Wrong. Just his sales since 1977 is better than 5 to 1 over his next nearest competition. Sure we've heard these tunes before, but that's the point. It is to show the unprecedented artistry of the man that historians voted the 57th most important person of the last 1000 years, as well as The Artist of the Century. He'll defend that title this century as well . . . And I remember when they used to parallel his career to Pat Boone's like they were in competition . . . A whole new generation of children discovered his music this year in the movie Lilo & Stitch and 15 million people have toured his home over the last 20 years. Once this new generation absorbs this music, they will branch out and find so many more tunes by him. Until this year the mainstream had never heard the song "Little Less Conversation." It was buried since 1967 on a panned movie soundtrack. What is surprising is how little was done to the original jam to update it. The beauty of ELVIS is that you never stop discovering him. My favorite ELVIS tune is a song called "Life" from the album Love Letters. Wait until you hear that ditty! As Alanah miles sang in the song about ELVIS "Black Velvet," "IT'S A NEW RELIGION THAT'LL BRING YOU TO YOUR KNEES."
Free Music Review: Already own these songs on CD? Buy this CD nevertheless. Hit: 5 Stars
Because I already own essentially all these songs on CD, I put off buying this CD for over a year, and then only bought it because it has so many songs (31) on a single disc. Yes, I had read "remastered" in the title; however, I had viewed "remastered" as simply a minor bonus.
So you can imagine my surprise when I immediately noticed the significantly improved sound that "remastered" produced! It's hard to put in words; the best I can do is to say that even if you own all these songs on CD already, buy this CD just for the superior sound of this remastering job.
And you don't need an audiophile (expensive) sound system, because I listened on sound equipment that cost less cost less than $100: a 3-year old Panasonic (portable) CD player (SL-SX290) with $38 ($19 on sale) Radio Shack headphones (Pro 35A).
Yes, Elvis's voice is much clearer, but in particular I appreciated the greatly enhanced instrumentation, particularly on the earlier recordings.
1/14/06 Update: When I played a mix of songs from both this CD and "Disco Years, Vol. 2: On the Beat [1978 - 1982]", on non-audiophile equipment, I was surprised to find that this CDs sound quality was noticeably better than the sound quality of "Disco Years!" I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it (and several times).
"Non-audiophile equipment" means: Several Tivoli Songbook radios (which have only a 2.5" speaker) whose FM signal was from an FM transmitter whose audio was from a (JVC PC-XC370) boombox.
Free Music Review: Punk rock's first breath Hit: 5 Stars
All my adult life, I had completely dismissed Elvis Presley.
I had heard that he never wrote any of his own music.
I had heard that his producer had once remarked that if he could find a white man whose music had a black sound, he could make a billion dollars, and I had heard that Elvis was that man.
I had heard Elvis's tamer hits played in grocery stores and elevators, as I bought dish soap or looked for a clock.
I had heard all these things, and I had ultimately dismissed Elvis as a sort of pre-packaged icon invented by a record company--a 1950s Peter, Paul, and Mary--or a one-man Spice Girls.
What I hadn't heard, however, was this CD, and when I finally did, my opinion changed immediately.
This compilation is absolutely packed with outstanding songs, many of which still sound revolutionary today. The manic drums and vocals and guitar and background vocals of "Hound Dog" must be punk rock's earliest manifestation. The background vocals of "(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I"--that come in almost a full minute before the lead vocals--are still unique, even today. And the playfully undulating volume levels and vocals and drive of "Suspicious Minds" help to shape what I think has to be one of the greatest, most soul-filled songs ever.
Some of the songs are, of course, better than others--for instance, I could live without the merely tolerable dirge of "Crying in the Chapel"--but overall, this CD is priceless, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves music. Anyone.
Free Music Review: The King Is Back.... Hit: 5 Stars
Elvis. One simple name that means so much. And to some music lovers, a word that means almost everything. Like it says in the CD jacket, "Before anyone did anything, Elvis did everything." This CD shows just that. Elvis has been called the King of Rock and Roll, a Gospel Guru and even a Great Balladere. This CD showcases just that. "30 #1 Hits" is a must have for any music lover. This CD commemorates the 25th anniversary of his death, and celebrates it in high fashion. 30 of his number ones are included here. Everything from rock to gospel is found here. All of his greats "Love Me Tender," "Jailhouse Rock," "All Shook Up," and "Can't Help Falling In Love," to his lesser known greats "One Night," "Way Down," "The Wonder of You," and "Wooden Heart" are here. Standouts for me include "Devil In Disguise," "Stuck On You," "Return To Sender," and "Good Luck Charm." There is even a `bonus' of sorts on the disc as well. "A Little Less Conversation," a song Elvis cut back in 1968 is remixed by JXL, dance-style, and is a wonderful listen. But the CD jacket is perhaps where the disc shines. It contains a brief history on each of the songs in the package, along with a few photos. I recommend that this CD be picked up because it will indeed please any music fan. It has the Elvis songs we all know and love, and some we probably forgot he even did. Once purchased you may find yourself singing along at times, and that is cool. Remember, Elvis is the King of R&R, and kings get all the attention. :-)
