While the more expansive "I Believe" Set is the way to go if you are a serious collector of Elvis Gospel recordings, this is the one you need if you want a comprehensive, yet not overwhelming, collection of gospel songs from Elvis' long career. The 3-CD "Peace in the Valley" is pretty stuffed with goodies as well, but the song selection on this album should satisfy most listeners. Completists however, might want to look at the two albums I've just mentioned.

Elvis as a gospel singer isn't the first thing that he brings to mind, but I was just ten when I heard his swing version of "Swing Down Sweet Chariot" and was just amazed at how good it sounded. This was a person who could infuse a sense of fun and solemnity into any of his so-called 'devotional' songs, and even if he's singing a traditional Christian classic, he manages to make it fresh and interesting. To such an extent that this album can be listened to in one sitting without ever getting boring or tedious.

Personal favorites include the opener "How Great thou Art" as its the most humble song on here, and his rendition of it is classic. The same can be said of the poignant "Who Am I?". If the leather-coat wearing, hip-swiveling Elvis is all you're used to, this side of him will come as a huge surprise. What is especially interesting is that he is actually a very gifted vocalist - one who can do amazing things with that deep register. He isn't a superb singer, i.e Jeff Buckley, but he works well with what hes got.

Four Stars. A Great Compilation.
