I grew up with Elvis' gospel records and the thing that still strikes me about his renditions of gospel music is the emotional depth and sincerity in them. He really believed every word he sang and it comes through brilliantly. This collection showcases Elvis doing the kind of music he was raised on and the music that was most special to him. His arrangements are sometimes tender "Stand By Me", "Reach Out To Jesus" and "Crying In the Chapel" and other times joyous and wonderfully rowdy "I, John", "Swing Down, Sweet Chariot" and "So High". The recording session tracks are also a welcome part of this collection..they show Elvis having fun singing his favorite music...you can almost hear the smile on his face. Elvis, no doubt was the father of rock, but he was a communicator of feelings as well.
Many good singers, may I add, started their singing careers in church, as I believe Elvis started his.
He never lost passion for his religious origins, and was wery enthisiastic when talking about it.
The renditions of his music in this CD reveal some of that fire that inspired this legend.
He departs from conventional singing, incorporates some of the different styles of American folklore to it, and develops his own.
I believe that in his day, some religious music conservatives were alarmed by his style; and I can speculate that whoever wanted to imitate him in his time could have been alineated from performing in certain congregations.
Now all this is part on the religious mainstream.
Free Music Review: Milky White Way

Even though I love Memphis music I only recently got into Elvis gospel. I bought the Peace in the Valley 3 cd set and was blown away by it. One of my favorite songs is Milky White Way where Elvis sings about shaking his mom's hand up in heaven one day. Among these recordings there are several songs from the December 4, 1956 million dollar recording session at Sun studios in Memphis where Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash were there and began having some fun singing gospel. There is also Elvis singing around a microphone and piano with J D Sumner and the Stamps. When Elvis finished with one of his regular concerts he liked to gather with friends and sing gospel tunes until the early morning hours. He loved gospel and this three cd set is one of the best gospel offerings out there.Free Music Review: The follower of Amazing Grace

Only six years ago the Amazing Grace set came out, and now we got this one. I think this is really essential piece of music.This is significantly more comprehensive than the older one. Here are all the missing cuts like Who Am I and the movie gospels along with all the informal recordings. Even Nearer My God to Thee has the reprised ending unlike on Amazing Grace. However, I doubt Life is really a gospel song, I would've preferred Talk About the Good Times.
Sound quality has improved somewhat, although the He Touched Me recordings could (and should) sound better. I Got A Feeling sounds fantastic, and is obviously mastered from the fantastic Promised Land's new edition. Sadly, the other songs from the same sessions don't sound the same.
Despite those minor failures, the set is simply essential.

You MUST buy this CD box set! You can hear Elvis's sweet, emotional, voice singing to God from the depths of his soul. Gospel music was what Elvis first fell in love with as a child, not 'rock' and it shows on this set. Just try to listen to "You'll Never Walk Alone" and not get a lump in your throat! And that is just one of many. Elvis's voice was a fantastic musical instrument, will we ever hear another like his? If you love gospel music you must buy this set, you won't be sorry. Even if you don't care to much for this type of music you still should listen to this set to hear a voice unlike any other. I hope Elvis is singing with the angels now because his voice was truly a gift from God.
