Free Music Review: The Least of Their Early Albums, but Still Superb

After _Brain Salad Surgery_, ELP gets real spotty, but _Trilogy_ is before _Brain Salad_ so it is certainly not spotty. In my mind, though, it just doesn't have the same level of panache as the other early ones. Mind you, it has absolutely brilliant moments, one of them being what is probably Greg Lake's best straightforward ballad, "From the Beginning." It also has the band's best un-straightforward ballad suite, the mind-boggling "Trilogy," which starts out as a lament for a love that he has to leave and turns into the sort of full-tilt psychedelic rocker which the band is famed for. "Endless Enigma," which starts the album, is the kind of piece that put the band on the map before _Trilogy_, starting the album off on solid, spooky, instrumentally-stunning ground. "The Sheriff" is one of the band's quintessential Wild West songs, none of which ever let the listener down, on this album or any other. Also in an Americana vein like this, the other famous song here is their rousing rendition of Aaron Copland's "Hoedown," a song which they routinely open their live set with, one that generates considerable excitement, indeed (The time I got to see them live, my girlfriend and I walked in late, right as they ripped into this song. I though I would bust out of my skin if I didn't see them play it, which I didn't. Well, I didn't bust out of my skin, they put on an excellent set, and the anticipation created by my missing this song actually marks the occasion.)
So we have five unconditionally excellent compositions here which comprise far more than half the disc. Underneath the level of these songs are two songs that one could characterize as "just fine," unfortunately left for the end of the disc. "Living Sin" is a somewhat turgid continuation of the fuzzed-out stompers they did on their debut (like "The Barbarian") and to which they didn't return a lot after this disc. It seems there's only so far a band can go with the classically-influenced troglodytic rock number. Equally so-so is the disc's closer, "Abaddon's Bolero," which seems to attempt for an ambient feel in the style of the contemporaneous Mike Oldfield, but merely ends up as a vehicle for Emerson's often aimless keyboard meanderings (a fault which slightly mars the end of the otherwise sublime "From the Beginning").
If you truly love ELP, then there is no excuse not to own and study this album in great depth. If you only know them for "Lucky Man" and the excerpt from "Karn Evil 9" they play on the radio and want to keep your acquaintance with them relatively superficial, just buy _Brain Salad Surgery_. If that seminal disc grows on you, it surely won't be long that you meander the way of _Trilogy_ any way. But for a first in-depth listen to the band, I don't believe that this one is the one to inspire the absolute mania from a fan that ELP warrants.
