Free Music Review: DEFINITELY THE BEST ELP ALBUM EVER RECORDED
Hit: 5 Stars

I strongly believe that this live album represents the best of EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER, who were the second group to release a triple live album, that other EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER greatest hits albums can not match up to. Furthermore, several songs by this power trio that were not my favorites, for example HOEDOWN and the theme TARKUS, sound a whole lot better performed live on this album than on the previous studio albums. KEITH EMERSON'S bass synthesizer (this was sometimes used as a substitute for the piano)and keyboard stills are outstanding, CARL PALMER'S drum playing is heart-pounding, but the sound of GREG LAKE'S clean sounding bass guitar is the best that I ever heard; additionally, it even outdoes the sound of YES'S CHRIS SQUIRE'S RICKENBACKER bass guitar. Plus, GREG'S voice also sounds a whole lot better on this album than on the previous studio albums, and his guitar solo on BATTLEFIELD sounds similar to AEROSMITH's BRAD WHITFORD. The synthesizer on MASS sounds like machine guns at war. JERUSALEM and TOCCATA with the pinball sounding synthesizer sound outstanding on this album too. the piano ballad TAKE A PEBBLE is excellent, even though there a certain place where KEITH speeds it up too much. I wish I knew for sure what instrument is used at the beginning of this song. GREG'S acoustical solo spot on STILL YOU TURN ME ON (featuring his 12-string guitar) and LUCKY MAN (featuring a vocal echo effect) are great. The sound of the grand piano on KEITH'S PIANO IMPROVATIONS is excellent and breath taking. After the conclusion of TAKE A PEBBLE comes the medley of JEREMY BENDER/THE SHERIFF, and I hate the way this sounds. I can deal with the bass guitar off note, but the clavinet destroys the true magic of the studio versions of both songs; however, there is a whole more outstanding music to come with KARN EVIL 9 that also sounds better performed live. I like the way how the first 5 or so minutes of 1st IMPRESSION (featuring CARL PALMER'S drum solo from the song TANK from the debut album) is played at a lower key note as is most of 3rd IMPRESSION. GREG'S guitar solo sounds excellent on this song too. GREG's bass guitar sounds so powerful at the quietness of the 2nd IMPRESSION. Then comes the the 3rd IMPRESSI0N (featuring a synthesized voice), which is also played at a lower key, with the exception of the HAMMOND organ solo played at the same key as the studio version. Then at the end is the sound effect that closes the song. I also wish I knew what instrument was used for that effect too. I used to love listening to TARKUS and BRAIN SALAD SURGURY that my oldest brother had until they got so stratched up form playing them on those stupid types of record players that people stack records on top of each other. He also has this album that I could not find for a while either, but when I finally found it at his house which surprised me, the record with sides two featuring TARKUS and five featuring 1st IMPRESSION was unfortunately missing. I would have loved to taken this album since he did not like it anymore, and it was still in excellent condition becuase he did not play it that much. So when I finally bought the 3 record set from CAMELOT MUSIC in late September 1985, I have enjoyed listening to it since then; however, the first song my other brother played on his stereo was the mentioned medley that I did not like, and this made me sorry I wanted this record. But when I heard everything else afterwards, I heard a whole lot more powerful music that the previous studio albums did not, or could not, produce. Having this on cd saves me a lot of time from changing records (especially with a cd changer) and there is a intro speech to the medley that is not heard on the lp. I made my other brother play this for his kids because they love EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER, and he even likes it now.
