Free Music Review: 8 Miles And Running.....

First of all, DJ ENC, a soundtrack is provided as a musical score of what is occurring in the movie. In most cases, instead of performing songs that are strictly for the movie, a cast of artists are assembled to contribute songs to the project. In this case, the system works for the most part. Eminem fans will be satisfied since Eminem is featured on 6 tracks, if you have the deluxe limited edition. "Lose Yourself", the soundtrack's lead single is clearly the best song on the CD as Eminem leaves the comedy alone and actually makes a dead serious track. He reflects on the movie's lead character, Jimmy Smith Jr. aka Bunny Rabbit, and he pours his heart and soul into the song. The title track goes through Rabbit's trials and tribulations that he has to deal with in the movie with his family life, his job and his personal struggles. On "Rabbit Run", Eminem raps one continuous verse without any kind of hook and definitely wins with this format. It feels like Rabbit is able to release his rage in one verse and Eminem fans will love this song. On the deluxe limited edition song with Em, "Stimulate", seems as if it was left off of "The Eminem Show". While it may be a winner with diehard Eminem fans, it doesn't break any new ground for him. Eminem is featured on D 12's song, "Rap Game", where he even goes as far as rapping in Pig latin and on one of the best songs on the soundtrack, "Love Me" featuring Obie Trice and 50 Cent. Eminem uses a Bob James sample and all three rappers deliver a decent performance. Since Obie Trice and 50 Cent are now signed to Shady Records, you would expect that from them. 50 Cent even goes as far as cracking jokes on Lil Kim, Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo, Ashanti and Charli Baltimore. Anyone that is a fan of 50's underground cuts will enjoy this song. He also has two solo cuts on 8 Mile, "Wanksta" and "Places To Go". "Wanksta" will sound familiar to 50 Cent fans if they follow the mixed CD circuit and the song is the 1st single to his full length solo CD, "Get Rich Or Die Trying". Both songs will definitely create enough of a buzz until the CD drops. Although, Obie Trice has been featured on the D 12 CD and on Eminem's "Drips" from "The Eminem Show", I would still say 50 Cent has more potential. However, Obie doesn't disappoint on his solo cut "Adrenaline Rush" and on his 1st single "Rap Name", which is featured on the deluxe limited edition CD. While this CD does seem like a Shady Records promotional soundtrack, other rappers make quality contribuions as well. It seems like Nas has some more words for Jay Z on his contribution for 8 Mile, "U Wanna Be Me". While he is currently seeking an end to the beef, it seems as if he had other things on his mind while he was performing this track. However, this track is classic Nasty Nas as he gears his fans up for his new CD "God's Son" which will be released on December 17th. Coincidentally, Jay Z is featured on the same soundtrack. Hmmmm, I guess Lil Kim was right when she said "Money Talks, BS walks...". It seems as if Jay Z and Freeway are more worried about promoting their new releases on "8 Miles And Running" but Jay Z represents as he always does and Freeway will have even more fans waiting for his frequently delayed solo release. Xzibit shows up with the Denaun Porter produced "Spit Shine". Porter also produced Xzibit's first single from his latest release, "Man Vs Machine", "Multiply". Other artists making contributions are Gang Starr, Rakim, and Macy Gray, yes that's right, Macy Gray. Her song isn't that bad but it is definitely out of place. Taryn Manning makes an outstanding contribution with "Wasting My Time". Although, this slow jam is definitely out of place, if she gets with the right people, this singer will have a nice future on her hands. Overall, I would recommend 8 Mile to anyone who is an Eminem fan. Although 50 Cent and Obie Trice make good performances, many people may see this as a Shady Records soundtrack and not a soundtrack for 8 Mile. James' Top 5
