Free Music Review: An Eminem master class.

"Curtain Call" is about as good a single-disc career overview of this mercurial rapper as we will ever get.
To feel the full force of his rage and power, you still need to listen to "The Marshall Mathers LP" all the way through, beginning to end. And probably "The Eminem Show" as well.
But as a document of his talent, this is pretty amazing.
I've always found the intertwining of his three "characters" fascinating. Is he singing as Mathers, Eminem or Slim Shady? They're NOT the same person at all. He often sings as one of them TO another. It's like climbing into the head of a psychotic schizophrenic.
Having said that, he is an extraordinarily talented rapper. Technically speaking, he's phenomenal. Normally song lyricists (and rap writers), when rhyming, end each line with one or two syllables that rhyme...Eminem can stretch that to four or five. Sometimes it feels as if he's rhyming entire sentences. When he off and running, it'll make you hold your breath.
The musical production is top-notch; it IS Dr. Dre after all, and Eminem clearly paid attention during his time with him, as his own production is fairly imaginative as well.
His lyrics are incendiary. Those who are easily offended should stay away.
This is one angry individual. The line between autobiography, biography and fiction has never been more blurry. That's the thing: is he singing ABOUT himself, TO himself or simply telling a story?
He is also the rare rapper who can create massively popular singles without an ounce of compromise, "Without Me" and "Lose Yourself" being the two most obvious examples.
We live in a world where Eminem has more Academy Awards than Martin Scorsese, by the way.
The new songs are OK, but they're simply gravy. The Elton John duet is a kick. The extra CD adds a few essential songs ("Kill You", "Renegade") with some filler.
If you've never heard Eminem, this is a fine place to start. If you have all the CDs already, it's nice to have all these songs in one spot...

The Stan's Mixtape bonus CD on this two-disc deluxe edition finds the main character in "Stan" bringing together his favorite Eminem songs. Among the seven tracks are two from The Slim Shady LP: the #5 Rap "Just Don't Give a F***" and the Dr. Dre & Mel Man-produced "Role Model." From The Marshall Mathers LP are "Criminal" and the Dr. Dre & Mel Man-produced "Kill You." The mixtape also includes two tracks previously unavailable on any Eminem album--the "Dead Wrong RMX" (featuring the Notorious B.I.G.), notably co-produced by P. Diddy; and "Renegade" (featuring Jay-Z), a legendary duet from Jay-Z's classic The Blueprint album.
