Free Music Review: Re: Encore. What do you want . . . blood . . . or to be entertained? Hit: 5 Stars
There are only two types who would be looking at this album (ENCORE) or, especially, reading this review: a fan or a critic. I am a fan and that's why I'm here. Eminem's first two albums, as they were released, were easily ignored by me, as I found the music juvenile, violent, silly, and too commercial. But as time always tells, when The Eminem Show was released, it was obvious that phenomenon happened and was building. Consequently, I have all the albums that I know of (except D12): (1) Slim Shady LP, (2) Marshall Mathers LP, (3) Eminem Show, (4) 8 Mile, (5) More Music From 8 Mile, and (6) Encore. Although the earliest stuff is still largely silly and juvenile (to me), all Eminem's work has juvenile silliness in greater or lesser degree. He defined a niche, which appends Rap Music and gives credibility to this style of music much like Lucille Ball may have credited/glorified farce. No matter how ridiculous and repetitive she may have been, she is still considered a genius. Some people only need to be good at just one thing.
One reviewer, and he knows who he is, is not a fan like he would like to believe, but rather he is a critic who is way too analytical and demanding, and needs to just loosen up and enjoy what is going on or just leave, . . . graciously. I know that Eminem has worn in his formula for Rap that is proven multi platinum. Moreover, we have heard just about all that we can about his mom, his wife, his daughter, the press, and his cynicism. Therefore, I ask, "What more do we want?" Do we want to live vicariously through an artist? And become resentful when that is never enough? Consider Frank Sinatra singing My Way for the 1000th time, or Elvis singing Jail House Rock, Blue Suede Shoes, etc. Who gets tired of that? Who wants radical change every outing? Who criticizes? Surely not a true fan. I accept Eminem as an artist and have no desire to edit or control his work. There are enough artists in all genre to give variety to the world of entertainment; I would never expect one artist to do everything/be everything. All I want to do is enjoy. And, if I can't do that, the least I can do is cut my losses and leave.
I should not think of Eminem as pitiful until he cannot rhyme, craft anything melodic, gains 50 pounds of fat, REALLY starts dogging his mother and ex, totally loses touch with the culture he helped create and, somehow, still manages to sell. That all would be too, too, too much for me.
However, the way that things are going, I'm inclined to think of this formula as being good enough, and I look forward to yet another version of The Eminem Show (if that is indeed his peak). Or, he is just beginning . . . .
Free Music Review: Don't pass this one up! Hit: 5 Stars
Awesome, hilarious and mind-blowing, are just some words that cross my mind when thinking of the new Eminem album, Encore. This CD has a side that just about anyone can like, even if you don't like Em. Like in all of his albums, you can always look forward to his new celebrities he pokes fun of.
If you are familiar with his other albums, you can tell that he has done a lot of growing up, and has totally stepped up to the plate, with raising his daughter, Hailie, and niece Alaina. If you listen to the song "Mockingbird", it tells exactly what he did to let the girls know where their mother/aunt is. Rolling Stone Magazine interviewed Eminem earlier in November and asked him about the song, and he said, ..."[it was] to Hailie and Alaina. When Mom was on the run they didn't understand it, and I'm not the greatest talker in the world, especially when I'm trying to explain to two little girls what's going on with someone who's always been a part of their life and just disappeared. So that was my song to explain to them what was going on, probably the most emotional song I ever wrote." That song is probably the best album on the record, next to "Like Toy Soldiers."
"Like Toy Soldiers", is about Em's notorious feuds with rapper Ja Rule, and the owner of the source, Benzino. I think the reason I liked this song so much was because I've been following the feuds for a while, and I head the song that Ja Rule made that made reference to Hailie in it. That's what put Em over the edge. In the song he says, "this aint what I'm in hip hop for, that's not why I got in it that was never my object for someone to get killed, why would I want to destroy something I helped build, that wasn't my intentions." This is his second song about this topic. This song is just the conclusion to the first song, "Hailie's Revenge." "Like Toy Soldiers," has a serious approach, where "Hailie's Revenge," is more playful, funny.
Just from reading up on his lyrics and listening to his songs, you can tell he has matured as an artist, and has a different view on life now. I wouldn't say that he's getting rid of his bad boy image, but he has toned it up a bit. It seems like he sees life as something you can't take for granted. Although, he still acts childish, like his song "Evil Deeds" he relives his childhood by singing some lyrics to the nursery rhyme "Mary had a little lamb," and changed them to relate to his life. It was very clever, and a fun song to listen to. If you enjoy his sense of humor from his other albums, you definitely will love this one, so I encourage you to go out and buy it, and I promise you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Eminem's Farewell? Hit: 5 Stars
Eminem is one of those artists that people are constantly going to have differing and of course passionate views about because he is a rap artist and if anything rap is one of the most powerful and argued about music genres we have.
With this album which I feel is probably his best work along with the Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem not only shows that he is versatile, he is rapping about subjects that are not only sensitive but thought provoking such as that 'racist' tape, the Ja-Rule and Aftermath beef, politics and of course his infamous 'wife', Kim Mathers.
Some reviewers think that the blue eyed guy doesnt have anything more to say, what about the anthemic track that is 'Mosh? It may not be radio friendly but he is making his point and very well at that. I have so many thoughts on each track of 'Encore' but at the risk of boring readers to death, I've narrowed my favourite tracks (apologies if I name loads):
** 'Puke' - this is just a wicked track in the same lines of his classic 'Kim'. I think it should be a future single.
** 'Like Toy Soldiers' - For me, this song is probably one of his deepest along with 'Mockingbird', the way he dissects the beef with Ja Rule and Benzino so eloquently without being vulgar. Just excellent.
** 'Yellow Brick Road' - God, I am running out of positive adjectives here but again another articulate and just awesome track! I totally love the way he mixed that beginning part and gave us a glimpse of his past.
** 'Rain Man'/'Ass Like That'/'Big Weenie'/'Just Lose It' - He goes back to his trademark lyrical genius with these songs, just trying to hit some nerves but in a humourous way.
** 'Never Enough/Encore - Curtains Down' - You can really feel the Dr. Dre influence on these songs which of course is great because Eminem + Dr. Dre are just explosive together. 50 Cent's cameo on 'Never Enough' was banging - his rapping is more solid and tighter on that track.
With 'Encore', Eminem has shown that he has evolved from 'Infinite' all the way to 'Encore'. His lyrical prowess and talent is just at its' peak here but yet at the same time he hasn't lost his humour and is still throwing us with his original alter ego that has evolved from popping pills on the Slim Shady LP to another level of versatility on this album. It feels like an album of farewell to me, but what a way to go out with wicked songs and sharp skits. The outsider of rap can now finally sit with rap's elite - with no objections from me!
Last Thought: Come to the UK soon!
Free Music Review: My Favorite Em Album, However Detached It Is Hit: 5 Stars
Encore, to me, is not known for it's classic Eminem tracks displaying an incredible talent in rapping. Encore for me, is when Slim Shady finally unscrewed the screws in his head and let all hell break lose. It's not the most talented album of his, rather it's the most unhinged. It feels like he's lost his mind through the album, and the songs where that shows most, become my favorite tracks. My favorites are "Rain Man", "Evil Deeds", "Puke", "My First Single", "Big Weenie", "Just Lose It", and "One Shot Two Shot". Rain Man is by far my favorite, because that's the biggest clue that Eminem has lost it....in a good way. He would later produce "Relapse" which would be a more polished version of these songs, but all the songs I listed are the glorious beggining of his transformation.
I don't enjoy Slim Shady the most when he's emotional and serious. I like him to have fun with his talent and be bizarre. I like Relapse and Encore much more than The Eminem Show because of that specific reason. I don't think any music from this artist will be as good as Slim Shady LP and Marshall Mathers LP days, but this release is second best in my mind.
The other tracks I didn't mention are just ok. As I said before, I don't really care for the heartfelt stuff such as "Mockingbird", but the supplemental tracks were not as ignorable as The Eminem Show's fillers. Encore's a pretty tough album to review because I do agree with some harsh compliments, because it's such a trip in another direction. However, with how much I listened to this album, I cannot deny that it's one of my favorites. Relapse managed to expand on this album, while satisfying those who felt that this shot was too mixed and incomplete.
I understand I'm a little bit of a minority for loving this album. I think the reason, is my background in rap music taste. I come from a history of Tech N9ne, MF Doom, Wu Tang Clan, ICP, and Esham. So it's pretty apparent that I like it when rappers lose their mind, and dislike it when they're calm and realistic. If you share my rap music interest then I do reccomend this rap album. Of course people will gasp at my attempt to put Eminem and ICP in the same sentence without denouncing one or the other, but I think we all need to grow up and accept that you can enjoy both. If there's anything that's going to make you narrowminded, it's being selective about music because someone tells you to.
