Free Music Notes for VoyageurFree Music Review: The GREATEST Enigma album! Hit: 5 Stars
I am tired of seeing people rate this album negatively for such mundane and closed-minded reasons. This album is the definition of brilliance! In case anyone noticed, Gregorian chants are a thing of the past. Electronica is where it's at nowadays and Enigma has crafted a new and unique blend of it with Voyageur. This evolution was evident with the 2001 single, "Turn Around" from the LoveSensualityDevotion album. Looking back at Enigma's career, one can easily see that the "original" sound was getting a bit tired. The 2000 album, The Screen Behind The Mirror, while great, did nothing more than sample the 1990 album MCMXC a.D. "Smell of Desire" even used the same lyrics from "Mea Culpa" and the same chants as "Sadeness"! If Cretu had used the same technique in Voyageur, it would've meant the end of Enigma. Instead, Michael Cretu delivers a superbly crafted, original and fresh new sound that quite frankly borders on genius. Everything from the beats to the background sound effects are new. The only reminder of the olden days is a small sample from "Sadeness" deep in the background of the song, "Incognito". Check out the lush atmospheres of "From East To West", "In the Shadow, In The Light", "The Piano", and "Weightless". Marvel at the three singles from the album, "Voyageur", "Following the Sun", and "Boum-Boum"! Lyrically, this album is in par with the rest of them. Cretu was never a lyrical mastermind. But otherwise, the album is fantastic. Not since Madonna's Ray of Light has an album affected my like this one. I imported it in early September and it has not left my CD player since. This is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard....ever! This is not only a must-have for Enigma fans, but a must-have for any fan of electronic music!
Free Music Review: A New Voyage Hit: 5 Stars
Voyaguer, as different as it is from the previous Enigma cds, is still truly excellent. After so many years of your usual chants and flutes, it takes some time to get used to. I must admit, the first time listening to it, I was slightly dissapointed. But after a couple more times of listening, I must say this is my favorite of the Enigma cds. It can slightly be compared to the Screen Behind the Mirror. The Screen Behind the Mirror had a harder edge to the music than the previous cds and didn't have as many chants. I looked through all of the reviews and was dissapointed to see how many people were so negative about this cd. People said the lyrics were silly, it was euro pop trash, the magic was lost...so on and so on. So not true. There is nothing about the lyrics that are silly. They are truly beautiful. And whats this euro pop trash? Euro pop is not a bad thing. I must say, I have always associated pop with your Britney Spears. I am sorry, but that is your pop trash. Sure, her songs are ok to listen to on the radio, but I would never invest my money on one of her cds. Pop done right is nice. Engima did pop right. I can't understand why it is thought to be trashy. I am glad Enigma changed. After about 4 cds of the same ingredients, it was time to change. I loved the European feel to Voyaguer. I have lived in America my entire life and I am so disgusted with the music. Its all the same after a while. Its so boring. I have had a whole new outlook on music after hearing Enigma. Everyone of there cds deserve 5 stars at the very least. Sometimes the best music isn't always played on the radio.
Free Music Review: The best Enigma album!! Hit: 5 Stars
The first 2 Enigma albums, I thought were perfect. The third left me very underwhelmed - the 4th one was a step up. Now with Voyageur, Cretu has taken a step forward and embraced techno/dance influences in strongest form. From the steady beat in "From East To West", this can only mean you're listening to Voyageur. Moving into the title track, this song exemplifies the entirety of this album. A great, pulsing breathing dance song that certifies the new direction Enigma has moved in.
Cretu makes great use of a fat bass-y synth sound that gives the songs their gallop, particularly on the title track, and Boum-Boum.
The experimentation continues on Incognito, arguably one of Enigma's best songs. It kicks in with a bass heavy beatbox, and lifts you up halfway trhrough the song with airy experimental sounds.
Boum Boum is one of the best tracks here. Great song. The album peaks at "Look of Today" a high energy dance track, club ready with a great beat; territory that Cretu hasn't ventured in until now.
He even channels Pink Floyd here, by way of "Total Eclipse of the moon" with its haunting melody and swelling synth lines.
Overall a fantastic and upbeat album, much better than Le Roi Est Mort and The Screen Behind The Mirror - I just wish I would've discovered this album sooner!
Word the the wise - I bought the special edition release of it but quickly (and accidentally) chipped the cd case. If you're going to get this album, just get the standard re-issue and save you the possibility of breaking the rare (and irreplacable) jewel case art.
Free Music Review: My heart goes boom boom boom! Hit: 5 Stars
Seriously! When I first heard this album, I was quick to write it off instantly. After having waited this long for the new album, is this what I'm going to get? I was sorely disappointed. My expectations were overly high and I was terribly let down. I didn't play it till another day or two, and strangely this time, I didn't pay much attention to it, leaving it to play in the background while I was surfing the web. Then it hit me! Only the opening track (From East To The West) hints of any traces of the old Enigma with its panpipe flute which beautifully merges into a lush masterpiece of its own. The eccentric title track is one of the most diversified thing that Enigma has done - quirky and hypnotic. Then I was totally arrested by the ultra dancey Boum Boum, with its simple lyrics but very effective dance groove, this track is begging for club remixes! It's definitely one, if not, my favorite track on the album! The Look Of Today is another awesome dance track, with its uplifting beats and repetitive chorus. The Piano is such a beautiful and mesmerizing piece of gem, neatly tucked amongst the more danceable songs. The closing song on the album, Following The Sun, is another highlight of this great enigmatic musical journey, and I'm beginning to get very comfortable to Ruth-Ann singing lead vocals as she has somewhat become an integral part of Enigma since The Screen Behind The Mirror. Do not be judgmental, let your heart lead the way and listen to this album without prejudice. For when you let down your guard, that's when the musical landscapes will capitivate your soul.
Free Music Review: Transition Hit: 5 Stars
Like all artists who stick with one genre throughout the prime of their career, and then transition into more experimental styles at a later time, Enigma is no exception to recieving negative attention. However, I feel that this transition fits Enigma perfectly. From the beginning, Enigma has been about Electronic Ambience, mixed with chanson and erotic beats. 'Trip-Hop,' which is the UK-coined genre that Enigma has transitioned into, compliments this quite well.
When I first played the album, I had expected to hear "the voice of enigma" mixed in with the first track. (For some reason, it would have seemed appropriate.) I honestly felt this to be a facelift of 'MCMXC,' though it definitely was not. (Still, that would be interesting to see.) Regardless, I thought every track on this album was fantastic. I'm still a bit confused about 'Look of Today,' however... it seems oddly out of place.
In case many have not noticed, the term 'voyageur' is a french word. It means something along the lines of "The voyage from east to west." (Though, not in those exact words.) There seems to be quite a bit of French influence about this album, actually... which is a good thing.
If you're into experimental music, Trip-Hop, or general Electronica, then I think this album is definitely worth checking out. I would also recommend it to other Enigma fans, though I understand that most of them are more adapt to Enigma's original style, and may not enjoy this transition.
