Free Music Review: A Day Without Gloom
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm an ordinary teenager and I've been a fan of Enya's ever since I heard her music on commercials two years ago. There is never a time when her music is not enchanting and mystical and this album proves it because this album is by far her best. The music is so free, bright, and spirited like the Irish music it is. There are slow songs with smoothness, beauty, and enchantment, such as the title track, "Deora Ar Mo Chroi", "Fallen Embers", and "Pilgrim". There are also the highly energetic tracks like "Wild Child", "Flora's Secret", "One By One", and "Lazy Days". The music creates a picture of bright sunny summer, spring mornings, with bright colors, wind blowing, and no gloomy rain. There also is serenity and tranquility. Enya's music, along with Roma's lyrics, expresses the subjects of true love, especially in songs like "Only Time", "Flora's Secret", "Fallen Embers", and "One By One". Most of the music is very Celtic, but Enya had interesting Latino influences in "One By One" and "Lazy Days". As always, she created a very Gothic and breathtaking Latin track, this time "Tempus Vernum", which describes the many elements of the earth and heavens. There is the very touching Gaelic track, "Deora Ar Mo Chroi", which includes the lyrics from which it was adapted. All of this music is so wonderful, it is hard to think of a favorite track, but I have enjoyed listening to "Wild Child", "Tempus Vernum", and "Flora's Secret" over and over again. Enya fans will find many interesting features in this album, the first being the fact that this album has a very different sound from her previous albums. The music was not as durating or repetitive, but quicker and original. This is the first album where high tech digital recording was used, which made the music stand out and express itself more. Even though the music is very synthesized, it sounds so much like a real orchestra. The music touches the ears and hearts so much, it is hard to resist this album. So, even if you are not en Enya fan, this album will brighten your day with hope, joy, peace, beauty, and enchantment. A rainy day turns to sunshine with this album.

Free Music Review: simply inspirational
Hit: 5 Stars

OK I don't write reviews much but here goes...
it seems that everyone i know has been singing "who knows? only time..." recently. enya's newest release, a day without rain, may not be as powerful or dark as her previous albums, but it makes me feel like the world is a better place whenever i listen to it...
The title track is a hauntingly beautiful piano peice, very similar to the title track on watermark. it's a perfect opening for the cd. "wild child" is peppy and upbeat, it just makes you want to sing. in fact, i often find myself singing it! only time, obviously, is beautiful, it's been on the radio, friends promos...it's everywhere i tell you! however it's not her best on the album. Tempus vernum is very similar to the 2nd track on Watermark (cant remember the name?), my friend commented it sounded like a "death march". its very haunting and it grabs your attention. then things calm down with "tears on my heart" which is gorgeous...it kinda sounds like a church. READ THE TRANSLATION!!! its a personal favorite of mine. flora's secret is similar to wild child, it reminds me of running through a field on a spring day...fallen embers is about being with the one you love through everything...silver inches reminds me of a spring rain...not a bad kind the one that you just want to run around in and sing hehehe. it almost sounds like raindrops. pilgrim is another slow song about finding out who you are...and how much it takes. one by one...it sounds happy but its really about 2 lovers having to leave each other and say "adios..." if u get the japense version there is a song called "isobella" next which is haunting and makes me sleepy :-) but thats good! also if u get the austrailin version you will get "the first of autumn" which is similar to silver inches.

and finally, lazy days...it may just be my favorite enya song of all time. it's got that same feel as "orinoco flow". It just makes me happy...i call it my inspirational song. whenever i hear it i just perk up and look on the bright side...and i usually hear it in the morning on the way to school when i am like :-P but then it comes on and i'm like :-D!!! what can i say..."dreaming the day away..." thats me!

Well I tried. I know, it's not great, but I hope I helped!

Free Music Review: Dance music for your soul
Hit: 5 Stars

When I buy a new album, normally I listen first to a short sample of each song. Not this time. I simply forgot that there was a CD player somewhere, as my soul was dancing in the fairy realms where their Queen's music had carried it. And when the unbelievable "Lazy Days" ended, I listened to that song 7/8 times more before returning to the album's beginning.

Somebody says that Enya is repeating herself, but I disagree. It's true that she has her own unique musical style and is not likely to change it, but every album is a different experience with a different mood. "A Day Without Rain" is true to its title: it's Enya at her sunniest, and its sunniest notes are right at the end.

In my opinion, Enya has evolved from the loose collection of beautiful pieces that was "The Celts", through intermediate steps, to what is really a concept album. In "A Day Without Rain", the music flows seamlessly from beginning to end. The presence of so many "highlights" helps, of course.

I think there's a very strong inspiration here: the season cycle and its relationship with the birth of dance (have you noticed that Enya never made use of so many waltz and minuetto rhythms and pizzicato strings?). Curiously, the same inspiration at the root of the masterpiece by another great musician often criticised for his "sameness". I mean "The Four Seasons" by Vivaldi, of course.

Musically, here Enya perfects her style. If we consider music as an union of melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre, "A Day Without Rain" is very interestingly made by Celtic melodies, layered harmonies that are typical of modern so-called "New Age" music but even more of Enya herself, baroque rhythms and the trademark radiant Enya timbres with her light soprano sustained by the choir and strings, a combination easily recognisable by any Opera listener. How all these different elements melt into the unique Enya sound, well that's the secret of her art.

Artists like Enya and Loreena McKennitt are gifts to this world. They almost make me think they must have some real Elf blood. Plus, they show us what women could have done in the past if they had only been allowed...

Free Music Review: A Beautiful Chorus Of One - ENYA
Hit: 5 Stars

I love Enya's music. So much so, ONLY TIME was the processional at my wedding. Enya has a rich, soothing voice with a style unique to her. "A Day Without Rain" is an ideal example of her uncompromising attention to detail and pursuit of perfection of her musical artistry. The album is a combination of happy, dark, reflective, mystical, upbeat and ethereal styling. How can one artist accomplish this? That is what defines Enya.
ONLY TIME is the song that stands out most in my mind. The original version on this album (as opposed to the remix) is contemplative, yet somehow reassuring. It brings the message of having faith and hope. "Who can say if your love grows as your heart chose? Only Time." As a side note, Enya is donating the total royalty earnings from sales of the ONLY TIME single to the Uniform Firefighters Association's Widows' and Children's Fund. "My hope is that, in some small way, these funds can help to alleviate the concerns facing the families in the aftermath of 9-11, and other families of fire fighters who have been affected by a tragic loss of life," Enya said. "My thanks go out to the UFA for all their efforts in helping these families."
A heart as beautiful as her music.
"Tempus Vernum" is the dark, mysterious song on this album. It combines latin lyrics (Summer Time) with a deliberate, slow beat. It is an interesting counterpoint to "Wild Child" which is definitely upbeat and more modern in style.
Throughout all the songs, one thing remains obvious. It's Enya. 100% Enya. She has a rather unique approach to vocals - they are almost all Enya. Enya records multiple tracks for the same recording, doing the vocals in perfect harmony. It is a shame Enya does not perform live, much. She is one superstar who has managed to avoid much of her adoring public.
I won't bore you by repeating my accolades for the remaining songs on the album; I think they are all wonderful.
Yes, I am an Enya fan - for life!

Free Music Review: A Pleasant Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

What else can be said about this remarkable artist?! Enya continues to present original, graceful beauty in musical form unheard of since the compositions of early classical artists. I've been a fan of her's since 1989, and never tire of her consistently original works. As a previous poster indicated, her sound is established and identifies closely to her. Stereotype? Unlikely, considering Enya delivers a distinctly inimitable sound to each of her pieces.

Commencing with the poetic instrumental "Day Without Rain," the flowing piano manages to convey its significance with trickling keys, airy strings, and drifting (almost inaudible, but effectual) echoes, setting the mood of this entire album. The composition "Tempus Vernum," commences quite omniously only to graduate into a blissful and an enchanting piece, synonymous with the sun appearing after a rainy storm. The rest of this CD is just as marveling and pleasant to hear. Not too dissimilar to her previous albums, "A Day Without Rain" includes another instrumental piece with waltz-oriented songs sung in Latin and her native Celtic language.

It is interesting the composition "Only Time" became synonymous in remembering the events of September 11th (the album was coincidentally released months prior). Though truly a remarkable piece, the song only enhanced its somber brillance with being identified with one of the most tragic days in American (and world) history. Whether recalling those unmentionable events or becoming embraced as an original piece, "Only Time" alone will remain entrenched as a musical moniker for remembrance for years to come . . . .

"A Day Without Rain" continues to display Enya's profound and elegant style that will echo timelessly into the coming decades. Absolutely graceful!
